This May, after nearly a year of hustling his quarter-pound Vietnamese American cookies between wholesale, e-commerce, and pop-ups, Vince Vu opened a brick-and-mortar retail bake shop in Japantown. But this isn’t a traditional bakery: In place of an on-site production kitchen and case full of a single baker’s products, the new storefront will stock shelf-stable items from a rotating collective of local AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) bakers alongside Vu’s.The shop—with painted windows that proclaim “third culture bakes, third culture community”—will serve as a “lower-risk space where bakers can experiment, grow, and turn passion into livelihood,” said Vu.Read the full story at the link in bio 🌀 by @ohanhoi

What does Anh Ơi mean?It’s my bake shop’s name, yes. But also a phrase I grew up hearing.A way of calling out to someone-a brother, a partner, a stranger-with care.It’s Vietnamese. It’s tender. How a tiny shout—“Anh ơi!”—became a small-batch Vietnamese-American cookie shop.Growing up, that two-syllable “hey you” echoed through hallways, markets, and phone calls home. It carried buttered warmth, a nudge to come closer, a reminder of who I was becoming. One cup of Chè Thái stayed with me long after my trip to Vietnam. 🇻🇳💜I still remember the bright pandan jelly, tropical jackfruit, creamy coconut milk, chewy bites, and all the different textures layered together in one cup. The more I build Anh Ơi, the more I realize community was never meant to stop at food.A bakery can hold cookies, but it can also hold stories. Illustrations. Ceramics. The work of people who make our neighborhoods feel a little more alive.That’s why I’m so excited to welcome Felix Tran, the illustrator behind @softvelvetboy, to the shop.His work has this rare ability to make you pause, smile, and remember that art doesn’t always have to be loud to stay with you.
