You’re invited into a world you may already know.

Impulse Control, or The Weight of What We Can’t See is an immersive thought experiment that invites you to question what you see, what you feel, and what might exist just beneath the surface.

Part movement experiment. Part thought experiment. Part something you’ll have to experience for yourself.

Through movement, sound, environment, and interaction, the work asks us to consider the invisible forces that shape how we move through the world.

But I'm not going to tell you everything.

You’ll have to step inside and experience it for yourself.

Hello friends, family, peers and everyone in between! 💛

I am excited to announce the launch of my GoFundMe for my thesis performance, Impulse Control, or The Weight of What We Can’t See which will premiere in September 2026.

This project is rooted in process-based research exploring the complex relationships between mood, impulse, and their effects on creative practice, and it brings together a group of incredible artists and collaborators to explore these questions through movement.

Your support, whether that’s donating, sharing, or just cheering us on, makes a huge difference. Every little bit helps fund artist stipends, travel, lodging, costumes, props, and documentation.

I’d love for you to be part of this journey: https://gofund.me/0c114f13c ✨

Who are we?

Grey Matters is an interdisciplinary, creative, and generative artist-based collective founded and led by Rae Grey We believe that we exist in a state of process and processing over product. Why? Because it allows us to sink into an idea a little deeper and better understand the “why’s” behind anything and everything we do. Why not?

Sure, we are a group rooted in movement, experimentation, and reflection, but we are also living in the gray, right at the junction of impulse and control, what gets seen and what is overlooked, how we can both live in process and in processing simultaneously.

Through dance, immersive performance, sound, visual environments, and collaborative processes, we explore the complicated, often unseen parts of human experience. As a collective, we are drawn to questions that lead to more questions instead of answers, experiences that cannot be categorized and sorted neatly into compartments, and the things that others perhaps might not think twice about.

Like gray matter in the brain that helps process information, control actions, and manage emotions, we too find ourselves in a constant and evolving state of process and processing. Always evolving and unraveling.

Dear Friends…
Whether you were with me from the start, found me along the way, or jumped in right at the very end. Thank you.

Thank you for placing your trust in me throughout this process.

For bearing with me when I proposed we do a half baked idea that led you to have more questions than answers.

Thank you for committing to the bit anyways.

Thank you for helping me chase after a train of thought when it had left the station ages ago.

Thank you for being patient with me when I struggled to articulate the ideas in my head into something tangible.

Thank you for keeping your cool when I was losing mine.

Thank you for the never ending laughter.

Thank you for trying something that was out of your comfort zone.

Thank you for continuing to push forward when I needed to step back.

Thank you for trying out that one idea only for me to scrap it later.

Thank you for being a monumental part of my journey as an artist, and more importantly, my journey at this junction in my life.

Through the blood, sweat, crashouts, and tears.

WE DID IT!!

As this work will continue to evolve, I need you to know that this experience wouldn’t have been possible without YOU.

Thank you 💙⚡️🧠♥️ by @ohheyits_rae

• EMERGING ARTISTS | Sep. 25-27 | Galvin Playhouse Theater •

This Emerging Artist production will include Rae Grey’s work: “Impulse Control, or The Weight of What We Can’t See”

ABOUT THE PIECE:
Impulse Control, or The Weight of What We Can’t See, is a carefully crafted, immersive movement experiment that explores the physical and emotional manifestations of mood complexity. Through movement, sound, and audience proximity, the work invites audiences into an environment where internal experiences become visible, felt, and shared. The piece asks what happens when we attempt to navigate impulses, emotions, and the weight of what remains unseen while existing in community with others.

⭐️ ABOUT THE ARTIST:

I move through the world with curiosity as my compass, courage as my fuel, and an enduring desire to stretch the edges of possibility. Movement is my primary artistic language. It functions as a translator, transforming thoughts, feelings, memories, and histories into embodied storytelling. From the East Coast to the West, my journey has been shaped by exploration, improvisation, and a willingness to follow paths both visible and unseen.

As a Black woman and movement artist, my research dwells in complexity: the tensions between vulnerability and power, control and surrender, visibility and invisibility, and emotional and physical labor. I am particularly interested in how mood complexity intersects with identity, community, and creative process. My work asks how our lived experiences shape the ways we create, connect, and move through the world, and how creativity can become a space for navigating what is difficult to name, see, or hold.

These questions shape my choreography and continually push my resilience, imagination, and understanding of embodied experience. Each movement, gesture, and spatial choice becomes an invitation to probe, question, and reveal. Improvisation, intuition, and elasticity of form fuel my practice, allowing ideas to collide, shift, and transform. I strive to create environments where stories can unfold fully, where tension and stillness coexist with momentum and release, and where both th taken in Galvin Playhouse by @ohheyits_rae
