How I feel making it through the first six months of this year 🤙🏼 Amidst all the chaos, I got to spend a weekend with a bunch of amazing humans. We surfed, did yoga, had a fun photoshoot and shared lotsa laughs. Huge thanks to @katielister18 and @seangalla for such an awesome first retreat. You created such a fun, welcoming space and I can’t wait to see @flosurf_ flourish!🌞🌊💛 taken in Ucluelet, British Columbia by @ohmyannie

If you know me, you’re probably convinced I’ve completely lost my mind posting this. Not this time (iykyk) 😂

I spent my entire teens and 20s at war with my body, always waiting for it to change before I let myself exist and enjoy life. I’m in my 30s now and something shifted. I’m learning to appreciate my body a little more. It’s carried me through grief and healing, ocean swims and lotsa belly laughs. It’s held the people I love and kept me going on the days I didn’t think I could keep going and honestly, I think that’s pretty damn cool. ❤️ by @ohmyannie

Over five years ago, my dad passed away.

For a long time, I thought I had made peace with it. Life kept moving. I moved to Canada, built a life, chased adventure, made mistakes, lost myself, found myself again and kept going. Somehow, five years slipped by.

Lately, the momentum has run out. I’ve been forced to slow down and for the first time in a long time, sit in the quiet instead of outrunning it. What I wasn’t expecting was to find my grief waiting for me. Not because I haven’t accepted that he’s gone but because I’m realising how many versions of me he never got to meet. The woman who built a life in a new country. The woman who got permanent residency. The woman who broke completely and is slowly putting herself back together again.

I used to think grief was about losing the person. Now I think it’s also about everything that came after. The conversations you’ll never have. The stories they’ll never hear. The versions of you they’ll never know. I’ve realised how much I still want my dad. I want to tell him about the life I made here. I want him to know I stayed. I want to hear his voice, his laugh. I want one more conversation.

The older I get, the more I see him everywhere. I see him in people who lead with kindness, who make others feel welcome, who take the time to really see someone. Sometimes someone will laugh a certain way or show up for a friend without being asked and for a split second, there he is.

The people we love leave, but they shape the way we move through the world. Five years later, I still find myself looking for him and somehow, I still find him.

Miss you, Dad. ❤️ by @ohmyannie
