With Mercury at home here, a return to teaching in an unexpected way has sweetened my life and the need for logic and sequence and productivity. They told us in high school before exams to “impress them, but to most importantly impress yourself.” I was just happy to receive such words and the sample of apple juice that teachers handed out to address the nerves. I remembered a very immature joke from middle school this morning and got Isaac to laugh, so I’m accomplished, sitting in the passenger seat. Revisiting “If Beale Street Could Talk” by James Baldwin for the past couple of weeks, and came across the page where Tish’s mother says, “Love is what brought you here. And if you trusted love this far, don’t panic now, trust it all the way.” I was asking God for a sign again and it appeared in the form of a firebird accompanying his partner. I know he comes to visit because I catch the flicker of his red wings as he takes flight into the small vast of green, much realer than the one I drew the day before. I can hear his singing when it gets quiet. The next day, a bigger bird, a hawk, came to stare straight at Isaac while I was gone. I might as well say the message was received. Love and receive. Had this thought today as we hit the road in search of a lamp to read next to, “heaven on earth is a treehouse.” I wondered what some of my music taste stemmed from in terms of a genre, and it turns out there is such a thing as “treehouse.” Like “acid house,” the list I came up with for the volunteer radio show I did in between classes post high school, carefully picking the music anyone on the campus could hear if they wanted to tune in. If you could think back to a time where a song took you right to a moment you could not fathom to even remember, would you write or say something about it? Would you forget about it because the next song came on and took you somewhere else? And would you go as far to recreate a song because it’s not enough to listen to it. But to feel the words in your vocals and your hands aim for the right chords on the guitar. Did an instrument ever feel chosen for You? I understand dance as my medium since I was a baby, but the guitar was a long lost love that my inner child holds close throughout all promptings of growing up.
