thought I’d celebrate 1K by finally putting a name to a face! 🥰

I can’t believe there’s one thousand of you I can share my love of reading + food with, the thought of it is still a little surreal! I went back and forth on making a bookstagram/account about my baking content for MONTHS, but finally took the leap last summer, and I’m really happy to share the book-lover and foodie space with you all.

Things I forgot to include in the post:
* Some of my favorite books, duh! I love Beach Read, If You Could See The Sun, Little Fires Everywhere, The Perks of Being A Wallflower, The Sun Is Also A Star, and so many others 📚
* I like a lot of tropes, but I’m a sucker for fake dating & friends to lovers 🤭
* Favorite go-to thing to bake will probably always be cookies. Brown butter chocolate chip if I absolutely had to choose a flavor 🍪

I felt like a few of my favorite reaction pics/videos were very applicable in this case! 😌

Honestly, there’s something very valid in getting up every morning and being exhausted by yet another nauseating headline, social media post, etc about what’s happening around the world. We’re tired of trying (and failing) to stomach the reality of chaos those in power continue to cause and the ripple effect it has on our society. Tired of having to try and swallow it down with our morning coffee (or matcha).

So, maybe you think that books/reading should solely be a form of escape. Same for book content accounts like mine or anything similar, but I have to remind you that we are large, we contain multitudes. I saw a post recently where someone said that we can be whimsical and also fight fascism at the same time, and WELL YES!

The backbone of what this account is, my love for books and food, those things are built from beautiful cultures that the “country” I live in calls “alien.” The authors, writers, poets, chefs, bakers, homemakers, artists, etc from these countries who crafted their work and shared it within their cultures and families are being treated in the most disgusting ways imaginable.

You can have margaritas for happy hour, fortune cookies after Chinese takeout (which aren’t even Chinese btw 🫩), real good soul food, but the people that made them are “aliens”? Their children deserve to be apprehended by 🧊 at the age of 5? The math is just nottttt mathing, and it genuinely never will.

All of that to say that this account WILL do both. Reading IS political, the culture and history of our books, our food, and so many other things absolutely matters. I’m someone you can lose your mind over a fake dating romance book AND the gross treatment of our fellow humans with. Whimsy and outrage can go hand in hand 🫶🏾 by @ohnygoodness

a mini wrap-up for August + my trip to Chicago! ⭐️

One Last Job was a buddy read with one of my friends and we both really liked it! If you like the workplace romance and/or forced proximity tropes, it was made for you.

July photo dump 📸

Looked up and realized that this month marks 1 whole year of having this bookish baking account 🥹 I can’t believe that! Baking a bookish cake felt like the most obvious way to celebrate.

Oh Ny Goodness has let me share recipes, trade book recs, and most importantly, meet so many fellow foodies + book lovers. If you’ve followed along with my content or happened upon a post and left a comment before, I can’t thank you enough! I remember how long I spent mulling over the decision to create this account or not, but I’m beyond grateful that I did! 💗

It’s been raining basically every day, yet the temperature is still close to the 90s…so it’s summer to me! 🌤️

Two of these books come out in just a few days and the rest I already have, so I am EXCITED! Looking my summer TBR right in the eye 👀

A quick Kindle tour! 📱

I loved when @kierstinsbooknook + @chloereadsallday did their Kindle tours, so I wanted to do one of my own!

One of my friends saw my new Kindle case and said, “Wait, I wanna paint that.” She really gets it. I would totally paint it too if I wasn’t 100% sure my rendition would look like a melted Smurf. If you’re interested, just let me know and I can send the link for the case to you! 🥰

BOOK REVIEW - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Let the record show that I am a Taylor Jenkins Reid fan. Big TJR fan, HUGE. When there’s a story to be told about a fictional famous person in an interview format, TJR can tell it and I will devour it. So, when my book club chose this as our read for April, I was excited!

One thing I’ve always admired about TJR is the way she writes strong female characters. They are unapologetic, which is admirable, but also frustrating and to their detriment at times. They are very honest and raw with themselves (even if it’s in hindsight during a fictional interview 😗). I thought the women from Daisy Jones & The Six were that way, so it was great to see Evelyn and Monique share that same quality in this read, especially as women of color.

Also, the storytelling in this was so good! It was passionate during Evelyn’s parts, then introspective during Monique’s, and that felt really accurate for their characters and their journeys. I actually read the last 100 pages of this with blurry vision because the waterworks hit me hard (which is clear based off of my not at all dramatic messages to my friend). I’d blink a few tears away, then turn the page and read something new, and my eyes would well all over again. Like, let me get UP! 😭

I LOVED this story, and discussing it with friends made it even better. Evelyn Hugo was a powerhouse of a character. Her life story was full of lessons about ambition, sacrifice, true love + its impact, and discovering completely new sides to yourself (the good, the bad, and the ugly ones).

If/when this ever gets an adaptation, I am going to be the most insufferable human to frolic across this floating rock. ☺️

April is National Poetry Month! 📝 🥰

When I rediscovered a love for reading, it was around the same time that I rediscovered my love for writing. At the time, I was reading a LOT and I was actually taking a creative writing class in college too! Despite how kind and helpful my professor was + how much I loved writing as a whole, I could rarely be as heartfelt and raw on the page like so many of the books I loved and like my assignments were requiring me to. Unexpectedly, reading more poetry ended up being so helpful!

I think there’s something about the way poets show vulnerability and kind of offer a chance to really connect with them through their use of clever metaphors and short form way of storytelling. It’s a work in progress, pun fully intended, but being unafraid to lean into my emotions and open up when I write is such a great feeling. I love reading for oh so many reasons, but I’m especially grateful to the poetry genre for teaching me so much. It’s shown me that as a human, it’s never wrong to have emotions, so why in the world would it be wrong to write them down or even share them? ☺️

spiked peach tres leches cake 🥃🍰

I’ve been wanting to make another tres leches cake for the longest, but I’ve also been thinking about peach cobbler…I HAD to try to make a one true pairing happen.

Plus, for the month of March, the lovely girls from my virtual book club and I chose to read Bourbon & Lies by @authorvictoriawilder, and it was such a fun time! 🥰

All the bourbon talk in the book left me inspired, and bourbon is actually great in a peach cobbler, so I made a bourbon peach syrup and added it to the milk mixture the cake soaked in! It might be a hear me out, y’all, but this little Frankenstein idea was actually great! 😋 by @ohnygoodness
