Sagarika Sundaram: Reservoir
Sept 30, 2026 - Jan 10, 2027
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
In Reservoir, her first museum exhibition, Sagarika Sundaram turns hand-dyed wool into monumental felt sculpture. Each work is built through repeated dyeing, layering and compression, then cut open to reveal the colours and forms held inside.

At the centre is Blue Mountain (2026), almost seven metres long, with cave-like spaces you can move around and almost into. Every work in the show was made in Kutch, India, especially for this exhibition.

Sagarika Sundaram (@ohsagarika) is a New York-based artist born in India whose work expands the possibilities of sculpture through wool, dye, and felt. Her practice draws on textile traditions and labor-intensive processes, transforming raw fiber into dense forms that carry the traces of folding, pressure, and time. For Sundaram, material is never passive. It holds memory, movement, and the possibility of revealing what has been hidden within it.

For โ€˜Reservoirโ€™ at Henry Moore Institute (@henrymooreinstitute), Sundaram creates her first museum exhibition through an entirely new body of work made in Kutch, India. Monumental felt sculptures unfold across the galleries, with forms that suggest caves, shells, and spirals while creating spaces visitors can move around and beneath. The exhibition marks a significant shift in her practice, using monochrome color and large-scale construction to explore how a material can become a record of its own making.

Now open: Sagarika Sundaramโ€™s 'Reservoir' continues at the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds, until 10 January 2027.โ
โ
'Reservoir' brings together an entirely new body of work by Sundaram, made especially for the exhibition. At its centre, 'Blue Mountain' (2026) is a monumental sculpture stretching almost seven metres in length. Its expansive, undulating forms create cave-like spaces that one can move around and almost within.โ
โ
Alongside it, 'Dancer' (2026), extending from floor to ceiling, spirals in a form that is at once shell-like and animated, its sweeping movement giving physical expression to the energy suggested by its title.โ
โ
A further sculpture reconstructs the process of rope-making, investigating how repetition, accumulation and twisting give one of humanityโ€™s oldest functional materials new sculptural presence. Here, rope occupies a space between line, labour, utility and sculpture, extending its long history of use into a language of form. These works, and others, mark a significant moment in Sundaramโ€™s practice following an extended period of research into material, colour and process.โ

โ€œWhen I look at the work, I see my hand. I see my soul in a way, as if a part of myself is living in the fabric.โ€

My show at @henrymooreinstitute is now open!! !!
I spent the last six months in Kutch, India, developing a new body of work for this show. I canโ€™t believe the day has finally come to share it all.

Itโ€™s been such an intense, amazing, challenging journey. So many highs and lows, impossible moments and breakthroughs. Feeling emotional thinking about everything that has happened. Unforgettable. The craziest thing Iโ€™ve done in my life. And Iโ€™m so proud of where the work landed.

Come see it in Leeds. Show closes January 10.

And a shoutout to the oak tree outside the Institute - part of Joseph Beuysโ€™s 7000 Oaks, which began at Documenta 7 in 1982. This one was planted here in 1988. Beuys, of course, was also a big fan of felt. ๐ŸŒณ

Sagarika Sundaram: Reservoir opens today from 4pm.

Reservoir brings together an entirely new body of work by Sagarika Sundaram (born 1986 in Kolkata) and is her first solo museum exhibition. Working with wool, Sundaram uses traditional, labour-intensive processes to compress loose fibres into felt. This ancient yet everyday technology becomes a means of sculptural construction, transforming soft material into works concerned with volume, void, surface, scale and colour.

Join us for the opening celebrations this evening (Tuesday 29 September 2026), 6โ€“8pm.

The exhibition will then be open Tuesday โ€“ Sunday 10amโ€“5pm, until 10 January 2027, free entry.

Upcoming: 'Reservoir', the first museum exhibition of works by Sagarika Sundaram, opens at the Henry Moore Institute on September 30.โ
โ
Transformation lies at the heart of Sundaramโ€™s practice. Every sculpture is built through the repeated dyeing, layering and compression of wool before being opened to uncover the colours, spaces and forms concealed within. Nothing is added; the hidden interiors have always been present, waiting to be revealed. Incision becomes an act of excavation, opening seemingly complete forms into complex spatial realms.โ
โ
Through material, colour, scale and bodily encounter, Sundaram demonstrates how one of humanityโ€™s oldest materials can become a compelling language for contemporary sculpture.โ

Conceived and made specifically for the space, the exhibition brings together a new body of sculptures that continue Sundaramโ€™s sustained investigation into the possibilities held within wool. At its centre is ๐˜ฝ๐™ก๐™ช๐™š ๐™ˆ๐™ค๐™ช๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ž๐™ฃ (2026), a monumental work nearly seven metres long. Built from layers of dyed wool, compressed and worked over time, its undulating form opens into cavernous spaces, bringing sculpture and landscape into close relation.

Throughout the exhibition, Sundaram cuts into the accumulated layers to reveal colour, pattern and form embedded within the material itself. What begins as a process of layering and compression becomes an act of excavation and revealment, opening up spaces that have been buried within the work all along.

Artist Sagarika Sundaram has spent the last few months continuing research into felt and dyeing techniques in Kutch, north-west India, creating a new body of work for Reservoir, our new exhibition opening on 30 September 2026 at Henry Moore Institute, Leeds.

Working with soft materials such as wool and felt, Sundaram creates monumental and immersive sculptures, rich in colour and texture.
