Love Chair, 2026
Anna Varendorff / ACV STUDIO

A continuous sheet of stainless steel folded, curved and drawn back into itself

There is something diagrammatic about Love Chair, two looping forms held in tension, hard material made to appear flexible, graphic and intimate.

A room is never just a room, and the things in it are never only things.
For Women and Fiction, Anna Varendorff of ACV STUDIO brings together a new body of work sitting between furniture, sculpture, experiment and domestic equipment.

Anna begins with familiar propositions, a chair, a table, a light, a cabinet, and gently moves them away from what we expect. A curve becomes structural. A line becomes useful. Something ordinary starts behaving strangely.

The apparent simplicity of the work is deceptive. Behind each form is a long negotiation between imagination, machinery, material and hand. Metal bends, resists, crushes, warps and occasionally argues back.

Following her monumental 2026 Melbourne Art Fair × NGV Design Commission, Women and Fiction brings that language back to the scale of the interior: the room, the body, the hand, the objects we live with every day.
We sat down with Anna in the gallery to talk about making, material, instinct and the strange life of things.

And a very special thank you to our dear friends at @vogueliving for their constant support, curiosity and belief in what we do. We love you for it.

A room full of small intimacies.
For Women and Fiction, ACV STUDIO lets metal soften, furniture misbehave and familiar objects become slightly less familiar. Things lean, hold, glow, support, interrupt, hovering somewhere between furniture, sculpture, experiment and domestic equipment.

There is something romantic in all of it. Not romance as decoration, but as attention: to weight, gesture, touch, proximity, and the strange private relationships we form with the things we live beside.

I first met Anna Varendorff in the back of a van.

Anna was delivering two of her very, very heavy chairs to a photo shoot we were both apart of and, in true Anna style, appeared entirely convinced she could move these beasts on her own. To her credit, she probably could have. I have since seen her perform acts of near-superhuman strength when it comes to her practice.

But me, having absolutely no boundaries, stuck my head into the van and asked if she needed a hand.

And that is how I met Anna Varendorff.
Anna is a Melbourne-based artist, metalsmith and designer, and the founder of ACV Studio. Her work sits in that wonderfully slippery place between furniture and sculpture, where usefulness is never quite the whole story.

She works predominantly in metal, but what interests me most is the way she makes hard materials feel strangely human. Things bend, lean, knot, loop and interrupt. A lamp becomes a gesture. A bench becomes a line in space. A table starts behaving more like a character than a piece of furniture.

Since establishing ACV Studio in 2016, Anna’s work has travelled far beyond that van, with presentations and exhibitions across Australia and internationally, including the V&A, ACCA, the NGV and Milan.

There is enormous rigour in the work, but also humour, instinct and a kind of physical intelligence. Anna understands materials through making, lifting, bending, testing and occasionally appearing to bully metal into submission.

Her new exhibition, Women and Fiction, brings all of this together: objects sitting between furniture, sculpture, experiment and domestic equipment.

ACV Studio’s Coat Rack is constructed from bent stainless steel tube, supported by two freestanding base plates.

The work takes the basic requirements of a coat rack, height, stability and a point of suspension, and resolves them through a single continuous tubular form. Repetition and curvature give the object a deliberately graphic, almost infrastructural character.

Two curves turn inward, almost touching. A polished stainless-steel form that reads as furniture, punctuation and silhouette all at once.

Part of Women and Fiction, ACV Studio’s new exhibition at OIGÅLL, the work continues Anna Varendorff’s interest in domestic objects that are useful, strange and knowingly beautiful.

A pair of wall lights built around difference rather than repetition: two vintage glass forms, held within the same curved stainless steel armature. Familiar domestic components are treated almost as found material, brought together through Anna Varendorff’s particular language of line, utility and gentle imbalance.

Anna Varendorff’s practice moves between sculpture, furniture and the domestic object, often beginning with familiar typologies and testing how far they can be pushed before their function or reading starts to shift.

In Knot Table, bent tubular steel is used as both structure and line, looping back through itself beneath a circular top. The result is precise, functional and slightly unresolved, characteristic of ACV STUDIO’s interest in utility, form and the small disruptions that make an object hold attention.

ACV STUDIO, women and fiction
Opening this week.

Anna Varendorff of ACV STUDIO’S new exhibition considers the objects we live with and the rooms they occupy. Things that might be useful, might be beautiful, and are rarely only one thing.

A continuation of ideas running through Varendorff’s broader practice and recent NGV commission, women and fiction turns the domestic into a space for invention, contradiction and play.

On view from Thursday.
Join us Friday, 6–8pm,

Matthew Allen
Three Tone Compositions

Allen’s works are always an exercises in restraint.

Built through fields of colour and loose graphite powder, the surfaces are worked and polished by hand until the graphite shifts from something soft and dusty into something dense, dark and almost reflective. The result changes constantly with the light, sometimes flat, sometimes metallic, sometimes almost disappearing altogether.

There is tension in the work: colour against graphite, softness against structure, control against something much less fixed.
