Hey Duende Duders! How are you??? Howā€™s your fall been going? I hope itā€™s been (pumpkin) spicy, cozily (and thrillingly šŸ˜ˆ) spooky and just autumnally awesome in every way. Firstly, Iā€™d like to apologize for the months-long dearth of duende discussing. Life has been stressful, to say the least, as Iā€™m sure itā€™s been for all of you. BUT the wait will have been well worth it because my 13th guest is none other than legendary expert artist of all imagined realms - human, wild, fantastical, spiritual and beyond - the magical, mythmaker of my weirdo writer woman dreams - O-Lan Jones!! @ojones777 šŸ„° Iā€™ve been wanting O-Lan on Duende Discussions since I was first dreaming it up because whether it is through her riveting performances as an actress and singer, or as a primitive, provocative opera composer, theatre director, visual artist and more, Mz. Jones is a stunningly present channeler of emotion and truth, aka, the duende-iest of duende stirrers!Ā  And stir up duende we did! In our vibrant convo, we discuss how growing up encouraged to be freely creative in her own way has impacted her expressive art today, her natural aptitude for distinct rhythms in experimental opera-making, and the role that impulse plays in her creative conjurings. We also break down the challenge and gift of performing poetic words, how to most authentically play a ghost bride (!), and why her epic mythic opera Iceland is bringing back yearning ā˜ŗļøO-Lan also relays some fun behind-the-scenes stories from her brilliantly playful 1993 indie movie Shelf Life, and how its recent resurgence in the cinephile scene sparked an exciting new project. And in true Duende Discussions emo authenticity, I may have cried a little confessing how a note she gave me while directing my play about whale singer songwriters changed my life forever šŸ„² O-Lanā€™s impact on me as an artist, creative experimenter and appreciator of our wonderfully weird world is hard to articulate, but this fun convo is a start šŸ¤— Links in bio & stories to listen! Happy Spooky Season and follow O-Lan and her company @overtoneind for updates on all her cool art happenings šŸŽ¶šŸŽ #duende #olanjones #federicogarcĆalorca #actress #composer by @ojones777

HYSTERIA (by @mollybutterfly and @divyamaus ) is a rage-comic opera exploring womenā€™s mental health through the lens of medicine, feminist fiction, reality TV, and the lives of the writers. This scene, "The Rest Cure," was workshopped in @overtoneind Original Vision and directed by O-Lan Jones @ojones777 in 2021. Based on Charlotte Perkins Gilmanā€™s ā€œThe Yellow Wallpaper,ā€ the protagonist Kate is being confined to her bed for weeks on end due to a perceived "condition". She begins hallucinating a woman in the wallpaper, and as her family and doctor ignore her, the spectre encourages her to escape, and chaos ensues. Isnā€™t this what the inside of everyoneā€™s head sounds like? Curious whatā€™s coming up for Overtone next year? Instead of New Yearā€™s Resolutions, weā€™re making NEW WORK Resolutions, setting intentions for the exciting new work weā€™ll be bringing you in 2026 - and humbly asking you to join us in our year-end campaign to help us bring these works to the stage and these resolutions to life. Of her new opera MINE, composer and librettist O-Lan Jones says, ā€œMy resolution in creating MINE is to dig down to the gnarly roots, and to swing from the magical branches.ā€ If you want to support the roots and help the branches grow, please consider joining our year-end campaign at our link in bio! A selected scene from MINE will be workshopped this Spring alongside our Original Vision Development Program pieces as part of #OperaFestLA. The opera opens up the inner monologue of the artist Imogene through the ensemble, the accompaniment by Brightwork newmusic, and the invented instruments of Bart Hopkin. We canā€™t wait to share it all with you! This mini-clip of ā€œThe Insect Marchā€ from MINE is from an earlier workshop featuring Jones as Imogene, hard at work on her bone sculpture, and Paul Chwe MinChul An, ChloĆ© Vaught, Liz Eldridge, and Kion Heidari as the multiple voices of her inner monologue. by @ojones777
O-Lan Jones has appeared in 3 films for Director Tim Burton. I photographed O-Lan for: Tim Burton: Life in the Line A four-part docuseries on Director Tim Burton, directed by Tara Wood explores the evolution of a singular visionary artist -from sketchbook to screen - celebrating Tim's art, his imagination, and the longtime friends and closest collaborators who bring his world to life, with previously unseen artwork and personal moments from his creative universe. It is meant to be seen uncut, unfiltered, and true to all the artists involved. Why We Went Independent: The streamers wanted to cut it down. Make it more "salacious.". To fit the algorithm. This is what creative freedom looks like. Not available on Netflix or any other platform. https://www.timburtonlifeintheline.com/ Retouching by Carsten Steinhausen #olanjones #timburtondocuseries #jasonwillheim by @ojones777
