Virtual shadow + off axis projection + animated fbx = scary mech that looks like it could %!?# you up if not for that thin layer between you… nice little effect for spooktober, what do you guys think? I’ve used this model a few times before, one of the best models on Sketchfab for sure by Just8, and beautifully animated too. Had to go thru some treatment so TouchDesigner could really figure out what’s going on but it was worth it. I love mechs. Lmk what you think in the comments. “Claude can do this in 10 minutes!” Is a caption I see a LOT rn and I definitely have mixed feelings about it. On one hand it’s awesome seeing so many people experience the magic of software engineering. On the other hand I am (a little?) concerned about the watering down of what is essentially a very complicated magic trick to a “caricature” of what it really is. I get my kicks out of feeling like I pushed the envelope and (maybe?) that gives me the appreciation for the folks who laid the foundation and did the research that enabled me to do what I do. I’m just hoping that anyone who picks it up now develops a real love for it and doesn’t just use it for transient clout… and this isn’t to say that it’s wrong to generate something that gives you joy with AI! it does mean that if you did it in 10 minutes then everyone could, and I’m selfishly hoping you’ll use that as a springboard to push this space into new realms. Rant over! LOL. Anyways, lmk what you think in the comments. Maybe I’m fully in “old man yells at clouds” territory 🤣

A few weeks ago I watched Incantation (10/10 taiwanese horror) and the monster design was so goated I knew I had to recreate something like that in TD. Viola! I bought a $1,000 @luxonis_ai (which is actually a ROBOTICS camera) and hacked it to make realtime colorgraded footage so I could rock up to the zoom meeting in full cinematic. The 48MP sensor sends raw bayer footage to the host which is then demosaiced + graded in realtime in TouchDesigner. By no means am I a color expert but I was stoked that I was able to get it close to the fidelity of the Macbook’s camera (reminder: the Apple ISP team are cracked + the macbook camera ISP runs on custom silicon) and I can now run all the AI models (hands, segmentation, depth…) IN the camera which frees up a ton of processing to be done host-side.
