Save the date 📌@elisa_andessner is coming to @ok_linz this fall.

For decades, Elisa Andessner's artistic practice has explored the body, space, and social attribution. Moving across performance, video, photography, and drawing, she creates works in which the body becomes medium, material, and site of political and personal experience.

BODY COUNTS. Körperzählungen brings together key bodies of work from across her practice, revealing the throughline in her artistic questions. At its center is the body as a carrier of memory, resistance, and self-empowerment.

Not a classic retrospective, but a layered path through the core themes of a consistent and current body of work.

👀Good news! We're happy to announce that Pleas of Resistance by @carlosalejandromotta has been extended until 10th January, 2027 - more time to see the exhibition (again)!

Pleas of Resistance is the first major European museum exhibition devoted to a body of work that unfolds through the exploration of different fields and media. Featuring over twenty-five years of artistic practice, the exhibition combines early photographic self-portraits with more recent video performances and installations presented in four intersectional chapters. These address pre-Hispanic homoeroticism, the politics of care as spaces for queer liberation, acts of self-determination beyond the human, as well as storytelling around silenced histories as modes of knowledge sharing mutual sustenance and rebellion.

Permeating the totality of the artist’s work is a firm commitment to minority communities of dissident identities and their struggles against erasure and epistemicide. Often engaging in artistic collaborations, @carlosalejandromotta realises the potential for social change through fabulation and performative rewritings of history, consistently eroding official narratives in a journey that is always blasphemous, bodily and political.

Jjagɨyɨ: Air of Life (2023) — a three-channel video installation and wooden sculptures by @carlosalejandromotta with Elio Miraña, ELO, Gil Farekatde Maribba, Higinio Bautista, Kiyedekago, Rosita, and Yoí nanegü. The work confronts the colonial legacy of Capuchin Mission boarding schools in the Colombian Amazon: the suppression of Indigenous languages, the deliberate truncation of cultural knowledge, the forced institutionalisation of Christianity. The Murui word jjagɨyɨ names an origin story shared by eight ethnic groups — "the people of the centre of the world." This installation breathes it back into the present. 🌿

Six wooden shaman sculptures — Tiger, Anteater, Eagle, Boa, Heron, Dolphin — guard the periphery of the space. Created with Maguta artisan Higinio Bautista in Tabatinga, Brazil, they depict figures who transform into animals to protect their people. Across three screens, the collaborators speak. Of what the Capuchin monks imposed. Of what survived anyway — through dance, song, craft, and the stubborn persistence of language. "Many things can be lost," says Elio Miraña, "but if we lose our language, we lose everything." 🦅

"I don't want to die looking like a human being when I leave this world"

⚠️ Content warning: this work contains depictions of needles, hooks, and blood.

When I Leave This World (2022) by @carlosalejandromotta centers the life and practice of performance and body-modification artist Tiamat Legion Medusa @dragonladymedusa - adopting the names of mythological monsters and the pronouns it/its, Medusa simultaneously transitioned from male to female and from human to reptile, with the ultimate goal of transforming into a dragon. In the first video, two assistants pierce Medusa's body with hooks, threading ropes through them until the body is lifted and slowly rotating in space. @carlosalejandromotta joins in Shibari rope bondage, hanging upright with arms outstretched — as if on a crucifix. Two traditions of suspension, one transgressive tableau. ⛓️

In the second video, Medusa speaks. It recounts childhood experiences of abandonment and assault that gave rise to the desire to change species entirely. "I don't want to die looking like a human being when I leave this world," Medusa says — describing its physical metamorphosis as a protest at humanity. The body is not a given. It is a site of radical refusal.

The two-channel installation pushes @carlosalejandromotta's ongoing investigation into queer counter-histories beyond the archival past — toward a potential posthuman future. If political discourse dehumanizes those the state would imprison or destroy, Medusa's monstrous metamorphosis rejects humanization as the goal entirely. Alterity not as a path to acceptance, but as an end in itself. 🐉
