Only 45 minutes away, Train Golf Course A.K.A the Old Tom Morris links are a hidden gem in the Highlands, bordering the River Aldie and the Dornoch Firth.
The course is the longest in Ross-shire and well worth the visit en-route to Royal Dornoch. The fairways are tight, but the stunning mountain and sea views make up for the challenge. A must-play for golfers, but make sure your driver is working well. Tain is a coastal classic and can be tough when the wind is blowing, but it's a true shining star of the Highlands. Don't miss out on this unforgettable round of golf!

The coastal setting of Tain can often result in strong winds that can affect the flight of the ball, making the course particularly challenging. The fairways are known to be tight, which can add to the difficulty of the course, particularly for golfers with a less accurate drive. The challenging layout, including the longer holes, can also provide a test for experienced golfers. Overall, Tain Golf Course is considered to be a challenging, yet rewarding, experience for golfers visiting the Highlands of Scotland.

We here at Old Drynie House hope everyone has had a fantastic start to the year!

The first walk we would like to highlight for any and everyone staying in the Highlands is Fyrish Monument. An easy to moderate 6km walk with good woodland path with a fair amount of up and down.

The Fyrish Monument is a structure constructed in 1782 on Fyrish Hill in the town of Fyrish, located near Alness, less than 45 minutes away. It was commissioned by Sir Hector Munro, a local lord and former general who served in India. The monument was built as a means of providing employment for the local population, who were facing difficulties due to being forcibly removed from their ancestral lands by the Lords of the Land. Sir Hector is said to have rolled stones from the top of the hill to the bottom, thereby increasing the amount of work required and allowing the laborers to earn additional pay.

One of the most enchanting walks in the Black Isle - the Fairy Glen.

An easy, footpath walk for family, friends, and pets. Covering a total distance of roughly 3 miles from car to falls, this RSPB walk is perfect to watch nature thrive with mystical feel with every step. With duck filled ponds; running streams; birds chirping and flourishing flora and fauna, topped off with 2 beautiful waterfalls.

The history of the fairy Glen begins as a well flowering ceremony site. Here, the local children and parents would decorate a pool, next to a spring, with flowers. This was ensured to keep the local fairies happy and in return they would keep the water supply clean.

Though short, it is a great course for any avid golfer on holiday. Highlighted by its gorgeous scenery in the Spey Valley, the rolling hills and mountains surrounding the course provides a breath taking backdrop.
Frequent changes in elevation on the 2nd, 7th, 9th and 15th, aka the cardwrecker, is a deceptive 90yrd downhill par 3 over gorge, road and a river. This elevated tee provides some of the best value for money views available on any golf course. The 4th hole “The Fort” is the star of the show being the only par 5, with a strong drive that plunges over 100 feet down to a dog legging fairway and ending with an elevated green.
The first 4 holes provide the biggest challenge on the course, taking these 4 cautiously will allow you to breathe easy and enjoy some entertaining golf.

It is home to breaching dolphins, the Chanonry point lighthouse and breathtaking views of Fort George on the left side and Inverness on the right.

Ranging from 5,342 - 6,085 yards (red to competition tees) this par 71, though small, will keep things entertaining for you and your group. Whether it’s the immaculate yet misleading greens; the seemingly perfectly calculated placed bunkers or the thick gorse bushes and the Moray Firth always lingering to swallow stray hooks and slices. The tees are placed so you are rarely driving down the lengths of fairways and the wind makes the drive even more challenging.

Fortrose and Rosemarkie have a number of amenities at hand with golf carts, clubs and pull-carts for hire.
