Alrighty, the money raised with the raffle for the Fallout Trench knife from the #ytscifichallenge has been withdrawn from PayPal and the donation to @warriorswayforge has been made! We managed to raise about 285 dollars, I just rounded up to 300. Which, I won’t lie is a bit less than I would have liked and I almost just refunded everyone’s money and kept the knife but that just didn’t feel right. People bought slots for a good cause hoping to win the knife and someone is going to own this bad boy. Gotta say that for all the trouble it put me through making it, it has grown on me and I am gonna be sad to see it go. All that’s left now is to draw the winner! I’m about to get in the shop filming now so if you bought slots, or if you’re an active Patreon member. Be sure to keep and eye on the OHF YouTube channel! by @oldhickoryforge

Forging out a railroad spike knife under the @fieryfurnaceforge 60 pound tire hammer. These drawing dies really make quick work of moving the steel! This is a step I refer to as “blanking out” the blade. The goal is just to take it from a square bar into a wide flat bar. After that will come the hand hammer work of shaping the blade and forging in the edge bevels.

The knife I made in my return to YouTube video is up for charity raffle until October 1st! All the money raised will be donated to @warriorswayforge to support all the great stuff they do for veterans!

How to enter: slots are 10 dollars apiece, buy as many or as few as you want, buy one, your name goes on the list once, buy two, it goes on the list twice. You get the idea. On October 1st a random name picker will be used to draw the winner! If you’d like to enter, check out my most recent OHF YouTube video for instructions or just shoot me a message and we will get you set up!

I do ask that entries be limited to the United States, as I’m pretty sure this knife is illegal in most of Europe. And even if you are stateside I would still do my homework on local knife laws and make sure this thing is legal before you enter.

Originally I wanted this to be a #toolmakertuesday post. But ya know, best laid plans of mice and men and all. Also I’m definitely a bit rusty, especially with my handle making, I had to throw out a few more than I’m happy to admit but here we go boys. The first batch of hammers out of the new shop! I don’t know exactly the number we left off at before but I know it was in the mid 1700s so we are starting fresh and simple with hammer number 1800. All of these are available, however I can’t ship them until the photo shoot for the new website which is still under construction is done. Aiming to book that for next week and hoping to have the new website up and running sometime soon for easy ordering. In the meantime, just shoot me a message if you want to grab one of these bad boys or if you wanna get on the board to have another made! I’ve got 2 pound, 2.5 pound and 3 pounders in dog heads, cross peens, straight peens and rounding hammers. And I’ve got plenty of steel and wood I’m ready to sweat! Happy tool maker…Wednesday I guess? I don’t know man it’s like 100 degrees out here and a cold shower is calling my name. .

Artsy fartsy post warning.

This is a sculpture I’ve heading my head for months. I dreamed it out on the AT last year when I was walking along fading off into my own world with this song in my head. I was inspired by a time Julie and I were hiking and we ran across a type of flower called a trillium. She stopped and fawned over it taking a thousand pictures while I just stood there like “ok cool a flower”
Then she told me more about them. A wild trillium is a very rare flower that can take 7 to 10 years from seed to bloom. I thought of everything that flower has to endure in that time. Wildfires, floods, animals, people. And what a small miracle each and every trillium is. I thought to myself. “How do they make it through all that?” And the answer I came up with. Is that some flowers grow. Simply because they refuse not to grow.

Lots going on at the shop lately. Having power has really taken the brakes off. All of the wiring is done. I have lights all all the power I need where I need it. There’s still plenty to do before the forge is burning. But we are getting a little closer each day. My good buddy Eric Dllalgio of @justthetip1836 was kind enough to CNC out this anvil sign with my logo for me to replace the one I lost in Helene. The one above it is one I had made for my dad some years ago. Even though this shop has been rebuilt basically from the ground up. It’s pretty cool to think of two generations working in the same space. I’m grateful to have this place and I’m looking forward to making it something really great for years to come. And hopefully one day, maybe not at this shop but wherever I end up, I’ll put a John Norwood the fourth sign under these two. by @oldhickoryforge

We have power in the new shop! This is a huge step forward. This project really wanted to be dragged across the finish line kicking and screaming. But with enough brute force and ignorance we got it done! There is still plenty to do before the forge is burning but this was the last big obstacle between me and being up and running. Still not sure exactly where I’m going. But we are definitely getting somewhere. by @oldhickoryforge

Welp Ohio in August is perfect weather for a day of forging …… made another attempt at forging 1700 style frontier blades… my favorite hammers in the next pic are form John at Old Hickory Forge and Michael at coal township IW…. Both excellent for pushing metal.. I’m going to try to finish out one of these …. I’m good at starting projects…. I just fail at finishing them.. hope you all are having a great weekend…. by @oldhickoryforge

“She would have done it for me”
Is what I always told myself when things got hard.

I’ve been sharing these videos on my personal Facebook with family and friends as I went but with all the support and kindness I’ve received here, it only felt right to share it with you. This trail was something Julie, my sweet wildflower and I had talked about doing together one day. When I was in the hospital after the disaster I made up my mind that as soon as I could stand up and walk I was going to start training and I was going to complete this hike and take her with me. Letting a little of her ashes go from the highest peak in each state along the way. She was a South Georgia marsh girl at heart. But she grew to love the Appalachian mountains and call them home. Now she will be a part of them forever. I have so much I’d like to say but I just can’t seem to find the words. I’m grateful I was able to honor her like this. It’s easy to get caught up in the beauty of day to day life on trail, but never forget, it was all for her. Rest easy sweet honey. I’ll never forget you, and I’ll try to find beauty in all parts of life like you did.

I had to chop the clips up a bit to make IGs 90 second limit but you get the idea.
Blood mountain. Georgia
Clingmans dome. North Carolina
Mount rogers. Virginia
High rock. Maryland
(Accidentally double dipped in Pennsylvania because I got elevations mixed up, it’s alright though she would have loved both places)
The pinnacle. Pennsylvania
Mt minsi overlook. Pennsylvania
High point. New Jersey
Prospect rock. New York
Bear mountain. Connecticut
Mt greylock. Massachusetts
Mt Killington. Vermont
Mt Washington. New Hampshire
Mt katahdin. Maine by @oldhickoryforge

Officially a thru hiker!

What a journey it has been. Lots of emotions that I don’t really know how to process or put into words. I don’t know if I found the peace and healing I was looking for out here, or if there is much of any to be found at all. Rebuilding my life still seems like an impossible mountain to climb. But I mean I went over lots of mountains out here that seemed impossible. The hike as a whole seemed impossible. But I just kept going. And I made it through. If I’ve learned anything out here that would be it. Just. Keep. Going. taken in Mount Katahdin by @oldhickoryforge
