The Old Joint Stock in central Birmingham is a Grade II listed Victorian building designed by architect Julius Alfred Chatwin in 1862.

Timeline of the Building1862 (Library): The building was originally constructed as a library for St Philip's Church located across the road (now St Philip's Cathedral).

1862–1889 (The Bank): It was acquired shortly after by the Birmingham Joint Stock Bank, serving as their oldest and primary branch in Temple Row.

1889 (Lloyds Bank): The Birmingham Joint Stock Company amalgamated with Lloyds Bank in 1889—the exact same year Birmingham was granted official city status. The building continued operating as a bank branch.

1997 (Pub Conversion): Brewery firm Fuller, Smith & Turner transformed the historic building into an iconic grand pub, preserving its central island bar, ornate Victorian features, and glass dome ceiling.

2006 (Theatre Addition): An intimate 80-to-100-seat studio theatre was built on the upper floor, turning the venue into a celebrated fringe theatre and comedy hub in the Midlands.

Musical theatre fans, rejoice - Do You Hear the People Sing (Along)? is back!

From Wednesday 26 – Sunday 30 August, Musical Crowdpleasers returns with a mega musical theatre concert packed with toe-tapping favourites, big vocals and dazzling dance numbers.

And this time, you’re officially allowed to sing along. Belt out the classics, defy gravity and embrace your inner musical theatre star - no ushers wielding torches of doom required!

It is with great sadness that we share the news that our much-loved colleague and friend, Brian, passed away last week.

Known to so many of our customers as “the man with the braces” (and what a collection he had for every occasion!), Brian was an integral part of The Old Joint Stock family for 19 years, making him one of the longest-serving members of the team during the current OJS era.

Brian’s cheeky southern charm, friendly smile, and love of a chat made him a familiar and welcoming face to everyone who walked through our doors. He had a wonderful way of making people feel at home, whether they were regulars, first-time visitors, or fellow team members.

Beyond his warmth and humour, Brian was an incredible leader, mentor, and coach. He helped shape the careers of countless people taking their first steps into the hospitality industry at The Old Joint Stock, patiently teaching them everything from delivering great food service to running the floor and even the importance of collecting glasses with pride. His guidance, encouragement, and example left a lasting impact on so many.

Words cannot truly express how much Brian will be missed by everyone at The Old Joint Stock—past and present. His legacy lives on in the people he mentored, the friendships he built, and the memories he created with colleagues and customers alike.
