This weekend: my first go on the new @yokohama_motorsports V601, supplied by the freshly branded @tireagentmotorsports. We've got some fast guys in Stock showing up, and they've all got more than 0 seat time on the new tire. When I set the Stock record last year (pic), I had bad brakes, bad sway bar bushings and worn SX2s. A new stock class record - the first on V601 - could be coming. This thanksgiving, I had the privilege of taking my family to the beautiful @racesonoma track. Perfect weather all day, and everyone enjoyed riding. Most of @86challenge was there. Not everyone. RIP Keith. It's easy to get frustrated when things aren't going right. My car doesn't brake, doesn't turn, doesn't shift, and doesn't run good. Various health issues. Etc etc. But I'm happy to have friends and family to share my passion and my struggles with. It keeps me going. Thanks to Haowei for the photos by @oldmansaurabh
As some of you may know, I blew my motor in June of this year. I'm humbled and grateful that so many people were willing to help get me back on the road. I'm making a youtube series to document all the stuff we had to do to make this work. Episode 1 is up today! Link in the bio. by @oldmansaurabh
Ok I did something very dumb, and my motor developed an electronic issue right before Round 4 of @86challenge (Thunderhill west). I was so sure I was going to break the record... now I was staring down the barrel of a $1500 tow fee and no driving the whole weekend. Except the community saw my plight and pitched in. Nico lent me his car so I could put some points on the board. @joey.zhu.129 lent me his clapped NC Miata to cut up the 86 group with. Ethan (@arceeracing) lent me his ND2 to set a reference time with. @patsko_labs towed me to @pmautoworks where the car is (hopefully) going to get fixed up. @xeron bought my extra ticket and split the motel to make me whole. Plus I got to ride with a bunch of people. Can't complain at all. Really grateful for the community! And I'll try my best to pay it forward. by @oldmansaurabh
@rrrr.family pointed me by through t8 (and conveniently blocked my closest rival) so I could bank a lap for P1 in stock class. Another great @86challenge event Check out my yt channel for the whole video and more by @oldmansaurabh
The weekend of fun is done 🥹 by @oldmansaurabh
Ok, I figure the end of my first season of track driving is a good time to post this. I'm not leaving bikes behind, but my real passion has always been in racing, not bikes. The upside of cars is that I don't need to train 8-12 hours a week to be pack fodder here. I'm very grateful to have found #86drivechallenge so I can compete against people driving exactly the same car on the same #gtradialusa tires. 12/9 was my 6th track day at Thunderhill. I've learned a lot more than I expected to and have eaten a lot more humble pie than I hoped to. Hoping next year is just as full of surprise learnings And fun. Maybe some fun too PC: Elaine @gr86.x2 by @oldmansaurabh
This OE rim was absolute garbage for tubeless when I first tried it. It's way undersized and barely has a bead retention ridge. An entire 10m roll of sufficiently wide TL tape (21mm for a 17mm rim) fixed the undersized part. There's no fixing the retention problem - if I flat, I'm riding on a prayer. I also made these gaskets out of old tubes to help the valve fit right. Altogether, I think I have a relatively safe and reliable tubeless setup, despite the horrendous dimensional mismatch between the components. Most people aren't as technically inclined as I am. I wonder how many people would just throw the tire on, blast some air and sealant in, and call it a day. by @oldmansaurabh
Penance. by @oldmansaurabh
I'm not an athlete. I like to cosplay as one, though. This weekend, I raced as a C because I convinced myself I was too experienced for Ds (I am). I was afraid I wasn't nearly fit enough for C, though... and I was right. Even if the allure of racing to me lies in tactics, handling and equipment optimization, there's no point working on all that if I never get to use it. I can't go on like this forever. I have to either fully commit to this sport and get strong enough to enjoy it, or walk away. And I'm not planning on the latter. Thanks to @jarne_belien for the photo. by @oldmansaurabh
People have always said I run crazy low pressures. The other day it occurred to me... what if I don't actually run crazy low pressure? What if my walmart pump is just inaccurate? I bought this @jacopowersports gauge to confirm. Turns out, I do in fact run crazy low pressures. 50psi front, 55psi rear. Jaco was really accommodating, responsive and informative. And it's clear that their gauges are high quality. But their attachment inventory is... confounding. You'll notice that this gauge has a hose and a straight, presta-only chuck. They have a 2-in-1 chuck, but it connects only to a hose, and only works with threaded valves. They have a chuck that connects directly to the gauge to eliminate the hose, but only for their digital gauge. They have an L-shaped chuck but it's for schrader only. They will soon have a gauge with an integrated L-shaped presta chuck... but it's not available in the 100psi range. This reeks of poor product management. All of their gauges, analog and digital, should have the same male interface. The hose should have the same male interface as the gauges. Instead of making a gauge with an integrated L-shaped presta chuck, they should make an attachment. It seems like common sense to me, but I'm prepared for someone to tell me that designing freaking AIR attachments is more complicated than I realize. by @oldmansaurabh
