The race is the test.
The work happens before.

I’ve coached Ahmad Al Janahi for five years.

And what I’ve witnessed is not just an athlete becoming stronger.

It’s discipline. Dedication. Consistency.

Showing up when motivation isn’t there.
Doing the work when nobody is watching.
Learning from mistakes.
Coming back stronger.

Whether we prepare for 21km, 50km, 100km or 100 miles — there are no shortcuts.

We train the climbs.
The descents.
The legs.
The lungs.
The fueling.
The pacing.

But we also prepare for the moments we hope never arrive.

When the stomach says no.
When the legs stop cooperating.
When the plan falls apart.

Because endurance isn’t just the ability to keep running.

It’s the ability to think, adapt, troubleshoot and keep moving forward when things get difficult.

Ahmad has demonstrated that again and again.

Endurance. Discipline. Dedication. Resilience.

To me, he has become the epitome of what GRITitude represents.

Not perfection.

The willingness to Race. Reflect. Learn. Rebuild.

And then show up again.

Live Life ULTRA. 🏃🏽‍♂️⛰️

How Do You Deal w/ Setbacks?

I spent months preparing for this race.

Strength sessions.
Long runs.
Endless treadmill climbs.
Oman altitude blocks.
Stair descents.
Nutrition planning.
Recovery.

Three weeks in the Pyrenees.

More than 220 kilometres on the race course.
Over 10,000 metres of climbing and descending.

I rolled my right ankle five weeks before the race.

I rolled my left ankle just thirteen days before the start.

For a moment, I questioned whether all those months of preparation were about to disappear. If this is a cursed race for me.

Then race day arrived.

The mountains didn't know any of that.
They didn't know how hard I'd trained.

They didn't know I'd failed here five years earlier.

They didn't know about the injuries, the doubts, or the sacrifices.

They simply asked one question:

"Will you keep moving?"

That's what mountain ultras teach us.

Not how strong we are when everything goes according to plan...

But who we become when nothing does.

Keep moving forward... even when you have every reason not to.

Nobody sees this part!

Everyone celebrates race day.
Very few people see what comes before it.

The 2:00 a.m. alarms.
The overnight solo runs on trails.
The endless treadmill climbs.

The hours of power hiking w/ your 5kg race pack.

The stair descents that left my quads shaking for days.

The mobility work.
The recovery sessions.
The nutrition and gear testing.

Then, five weeks before the race, during an altitude training camp in Oman, I rolled my right ankle. It set me back about ten days.

Just as I was getting my confidence back...

...thirteen days before the start, while recceing the Val d'Aran course, I rolled my left ankle. 😕

That one hurt even more.
Not just physically.
Mentally.

I questioned whether all the months of preparation were about to disappear just days before the race.

A cursed race?!

It affected my training.
It affected my confidence.
And yes, it ultimately affected my race.

But there was one thing it never changed.
There was no way in hell I wasn't going to stand on that start line.

Not after waiting five years for another opportunity.

So I adapted.
I did my recovery work. Cold river baths twice daily.

I taped my ankles.
I adjusted my training.

I respected the mountains.
And I kept believing.

Three weeks in the Pyrenees.
220 kilometres on the race course.

More than 10,000 metres of climbing and descending.

Not chasing fitness anymore.
Simply preparing my body and mind for whatever the mountain would ask of me.

None of it guaranteed I'd finish.

But every single session gave me one more reason to believe I could.

Because the finish line is only the visible part of the story.

The finish line is earned... long before race day.

Five years ago I left Val d'Aran in an ambulance.

30km into the race I fractured my heel.
I did not know it when it happened, so I continued.

At 148km, I had also developed a fever of almost 40°C.

The dream ended there. Pulled from the race.

For five years this race stayed in the back of my mind. Not reallly because I wanted revenge on the mountain.

Mountains don't owe us anything.
I simply wanted another opportunity.

Last weekend I finally got it.

And this time...

I rang the bell. 🥳

It's Go Time again.

5 years ago, an unfortunate DNF sent me to the hospital on this very course.

Borrowing words from my great friend and athlete @themanbeforethemiles

"One of the toughest 100 milers on the map, but also some of the best trails and views in the world, set high and deep in the Pyrenees mountains."

Also; expecting to go deep into hallucinations, visit the pain cave, and have insightful conversations with the mountains.

A great person to share the experience with, Mark Telford, 2 times @guinnessworldrecords holder; who knows discipline, suffering, getting things done when shit gets tough: #GRITitude

10,000m of elevation again, 48 hour cut off.
Double nightshift expected.

See you on the other side.

It's soon 'GO-Time' again.

5 years ago, same race, same course, I fractured my right heel just 5hrs in, unbeknownst to me. I continued for another 125km. I was (rightfully) pulled from the race - with football-sized foot and 39.6 fever.

I had reached 149km - just one last hill to climb... But ended up in hospital instead. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Over the past 2 weeks, I've practically recce'd the full course, climbed each beautiful mountain, and descended them all.
200km ++
10,000m ↗️↘️

Should I be smashed by this race again - 🤞🏽 not - at least I saw it all.

'Lets Go Break a Leg!'. 😅🏃🏻
