Aargauer Kunsthaus
Stranger in the Village
Reflecting on Racism with James Baldwin
03.09.23 – 07.01.24

Opening Saturday 2. September 2023
6pm

2./3. September Museum Reopening

In his famous text Stranger in the Village, the US-American writer James Baldwin addressed the racism that informed his stay in Switzerland in the 1950s. Baldwin's words continue to inspire many artists to this day. They hold up a mirror to us as a society and have lost none of their relevance. The group exhibition explores belonging and exclusion through current works by local and international artists, raising questions that concern us all.

Käthe Schönle & Olga Titus

curated by Paula Marschalek

Special Artist Guest: Birgit Graschopf @ag18_gallery @marschalek.art @k.schoenle @olga.titus @birgitgraschopf

16.10.2025 – 21.11.2025

House of Awe is an exhibition project featuring works by Olga Titus and Käthe Schönle, curated by Paula Marschalek. Birgit Graschopf has been invited as a special guest artist.

The exhibition invites visitors to explore the tensions between closeness and strangeness, protection and limitation, tradition and transformation – and to experience the power of artistic collaboration. The concept of ‘house’ serves as main idea: mental and physical spaces are created that deal with thoughts about safety, refuge and memory, while also visualizing ruptures and ambivalent meanings.

The artists join forces to collaboratively develop new works, which they present as a Gesamtkunstwerk. In doing so, they question artistic production and presentation in a playful and also critical way. Different working methods and approaches come together, both analogue and digital. Questions of identity, womanhood and humanity overlap, with the focus on the examination of social and cultural structures.

"Zeit im Wandel"

The iridescent, shimmering art in construction project by Olga Titus on the clock faces of the Bullingerkirche addresses the theme of time in transition, the flowing and the movement. A clock symbolizes this. The change can be seen here in the quarter with a temporary town hall, it can be seen in our everyday life, but also in politics. The play of colors on the dials is also fluid and in motion, changing depending on the perspective of the viewer.

Thank you dear Peter Baracchi for the amazing pictures!
