Growing up, one of my worst habits was leaving my bedside lamp on. Whether I was up late doing homework, sneakily playing Pokémon on my DSi, or reading the Calvin and Hobbes comics you gave me, I usually forgot to flip the switch before I fell asleep. You’d get on me, saying it “wasted energy,” “could be dangerous,” or “disrupted my sleep cycle.” After late nights at the office, you’d always stop by my room to turn it off. Sometimes, I’d wake up, and we’d talk about hoops, what I did to make Mom mad, or how things were going with my friends and school. Other times, I’d wake up in the morning, and the lamp would already be off.

You never got mad or complained; you just did what needed to be done. You are tirelessly patient—it’s one of the things I admire most about you.

I’m beyond proud of you, not just for the tangible things you’ve created, but for the way you positively impact everyone you encounter. Happy 50th, Papa. I never said it, but thanks for always turning off the light.
