Next introduction is Henry Tyson @clay.corps of Material Bodies: Identities in Clay at @olivagallery this November!

Henry Tyson is a multimedia artist based in Chicago, Illinois. They graduated from Macalester College in 2023 and from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with MFA in Ceramics in 2026. They have focused their practice on exploring the unstable and, occasionally, contradictory interests and identities that they hold. Tyson’s current work “vandalizes” unstable histories into something they find beautiful while honoring and challenging the exclusionary communities of hyper-sexual gay men. They place the meticulousness and presence of mind learned through study and writing of poetry in conversation with the physical labor and muscle memory of production pottery.

With the closing of 𝙒𝙞𝙩𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝘽𝙚𝙙𝙡𝙖𝙢 at Oliva Gallery (@olivagallery), I want to extend my sincere appreciation to everyone who visited the exhibition and engaged with the work.

It was a pleasure to exhibit alongside Lynn Basa (@lynn.basa), whose ceramic sculptures offered a compelling counterpart to my "Split / Divide" series. Although our practices differ considerably, the exhibition provided an opportunity to consider how artists respond to disorder through material form. The relationship between our work invited questions about what can be observed and documented without necessarily being understood or resolved.

As an Adjunct Associate Professor in Painting and Drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), it was especially meaningful to welcome my students to the exhibition. Having the opportunity to engage with artwork outside the classroom is an important part of arts education. I am particularly grateful to Oliva Gallery for creating these opportunities and supporting the connection between artistic practice and education.

My thanks also go to Chanelle Lacy from Gertie (@gertie.chicago) for moderating our closing conversation.

We always design homes to support the way a family truly lives. This young family loves to read, and spend quality time together while also entertaining friends.

We incorporated built-in bookshelves in the study as well as along the hallway leading to the den. A sunny breakfast-room banquette is the perfect place to curl up with a book, while the outdoor living room is just steps away from the media room, making movie nights, football games, and pool days easy to enjoy year-round.

Introducing @hillarycatrow - our next Material Bodies: Identities in Clay Artist at @olivagallery this November.

Hillary Catrow is a Chicago based mixed media artist and ceramicist whose work is inspired by our spiritual relationship to nature, body and healing through cultural myths. Her most recent body of work explores the impacts of how the stories we tell ourselves impacts how we view ourselves and our bodies. In addition to her fine art practice, Catrow is a licensed acupuncturist who specializes in body-based mental health and pain management support.

Introducing Matthew King @matthew____king - our next Material Bodies: Identities in Clay Artist at @olivagallery this November.

Matthew King is a cross-disciplinary artist living and working in Minneapolis, MN. Their career has spanned environmental science to small-scale agriculture, a diversity of experience that informs the experimental blending of mediums characteristic of their practice, guided by a deep topophilia. Their sculptural practice focuses on listening to the agency of materials and the spontaneous forms and textures that arise from that relational sensitivity. Atmospheric ceramic firings and the cultivation of fungi on photography are some of the methods used to showcase such more-than-human expressions. Matthew has exhibited their work in the United States, South Africa, and Germany, is a returning guest lecturer at MCAD, and a current MFA candidate at UMN.

Introducing @lynn.basa - our next Material Bodies: Identities in Clay Artist @olivagallery this November.

Based in Chicago, Basa works across ceramic sculpture, painting, and site-specific installation. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is in the collections of the Museum of Arts and Design, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the RISD Museum, among others. Basa taught in SAIC’s sculpture department and wrote The Artist’s Guide to Public Art.

Introducing our next Material Bodies: Identities in Clay Artist Andryea Natkin. @andryeanatkin at @olivagallery this November.

Based in Chicago, Andryea completed her formal studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago before exploring drawing, painting, and mosaics — each a step toward discovering that clay was her truest medium. Her work has been exhibited at Woman Made Gallery, Jackson Junge Gallery, and Oliva Gallery in Chicago, as well as galleries across the US and internationally.
