THE ART OF ASKING:
- is one that I'm wanting to get better at.

I feel some shame about not having the finances / backing to make a film in a traditional / HETV sort of manner.

But we are where we are with this project, so asking is required.

My goal is to see running a crowdfunding campaign as an offer, an invitation to donate if people want to.

Any support in the form of donations will be gratefully received.

MAYBE THIS TIME

This wonderful song (lyrics below) from 1972’s Cabaret (brilliant film btw) is about romantic love, but i think all filmmakers have a quasi-romantic relationship with filmmaking - perhaps because the act of making filmmaking is anything but romantic; it is only the finished product that has the potential to be magical.

Film has the potential for reaching a mass audience in a sublime way, but achieving that is rare.

Still, it’s good to be having another shot at doing something great: the studio / shoot date is booked - just need to put it all together now...

Maybe this time…

Maybe This Time
Written by John Kander and Fred Ebb
Sung by: Liza Minelli

“
Maybe this time I'll be lucky
Maybe this time he'll stay
Maybe this time, for the first time
Love won't hurry away

He will hold me fast
I'll be home at last
Not a loser anymore
Like the last time and the time before

Everybody loves a winner
So nobody loved me
Lady Peaceful, Lady Happy
That's what I long to be

Well, all the odds are, they're in my favor
Something's bound to begin
It's gotta happen, happen sometime
Maybe this time I'll win

'Cause everybody, oh, they love a winner
So nobody loved me
Lady Peaceful, Lady Happy
That's what I long to be

Well, all the odds are, they're in my favor
Something's bound to begin
It's gotta happen, happen sometime
Maybe this time
Maybe this time I'll win

JAMES BLONDE: LICENCE TO DELIVER

So, after 007 got sold to Amazon me and my buddy Stephen Scott-Hayward wrote a delightful little comedy short satirising said partnership…

No-one’s done a good Bond parody in a while...

it could be a real winner…

The script is so good that I’m actually slightly petrified of screwing it up - but am committed to feeling the fear and doing it anyway…

We’re already partially crewed up - there seems to be a real hunger for fun & quick projects like this - now in the process of sorting locations and cast…

to be continued… by @oliverfilmm

I had a terrific time at the @bristol.crew X @bfinetwork 'Find Your Crew' event at the Watershed in Bristol on Saturday. :)

I was on the panel repping the AD department - did my best to articulate why the role is important and how it can work to make a shoot fun, safe and productive.

Was a treat to share the stage with @noomiyates, @mattharrisfreeth and event organiser @camerawomandop taken in Watershed by @oliverfilmm

'HILARIOUS'

Nick Love is an auteur of sorts, making movies for a audience that probably doesn’t read ‘sight & sound' magazine.

I noticed these ads for his latest (Marching Powder) on buses a couple of weeks ago - my favourite part is the 4-star review with the quote ‘Hilarious’ with no attribution. They’re just making it up.

You could do a lot worse than ‘hilarious’. And four stars is a smart choice (three would be average, but five and people might smell a rat).

There is no listing for this film on Rotten Tomatoes as of the day before release.

if people see the bus ads and decide to go on opening weekend before any reviews come out, well then there’s a chance of a decent opening weekend.

This marketing team knows what they’re doing… by @oliverfilmm

AN ARMY MARCHES ON ITS STOMACH

i’m mainly NOT a fan of military comparisons for filmmaking as i think they are blokey, outdated, and unnecessarily conflict-focussed BUT the above one gets to stay as the link between sustenance and morale should never be underestimated - and yesterdays shoot was a humdinger…

We were filming for Adidas at Bristol Bears swish out-of-town training facilities, and when i saw they had put edible flowers atop the eggs benedict (pictured - one of a half-dozen breakfast options) i knew we were in for a good day, grubwise...

I expressed my gratitude to the chefs at each meal as ever more delights were laid out before us, and they said that THEY were having a great day because unlike all the strict-diet players they normally cater for, with us they could try out some more sweet & tasty garnishes and sauces… and they were also happy when asked to buy in haribo which was practically unheard of there…

SIDE NOTE: they kept the haribo in the fridge before putting it out: i have no idea if that makes it taste better but i love the idea that they thought it could…

So, we got to have amazing food by people who were enjoying preparing it. This never (well, rarely) happens. I’m really grateful. by @oliverfilmm

This event should be great!

I'm looking forward to it...

Because of a quirk of tech, i can't do a story with a link in, so to apply / find out more, go to @bristol.crew - use the linktree link in their bio xx by @oliverfilmm

AD-ing Masterclass at Bristol Film School 7th Feb 2025:

I (the one in the loud jacket at the front) always find my times at Bristol Film School invigorating: some super smart questions came my way, we got a camera out (thanks Dave) and shot a scene from one of the students’ upcoming shorts, and i tried my best to be candid, informative and intentional. The time flew by... :) Thanks to Freya / Dave / Dave / Jaku for facilitating. 🙏 by @oliverfilmm

BEHIND THE SCREEN @ninetreestudios

An even by Bristol Creative Industries Network @bristol_ci

Networking, great food (by Eat a Pitta) and two panel discussions on the state of the screen industries.

Attendees were from a wide range of specialisms, therefore wants and needs varied considerably

That said, the night was well run, constructive, and some good ideas were shared. glad i went :) by @oliverfilmm

MORNING BRIEFINGS (are a wonderful thing)

These are photos of Director Yomi Ayeni talking to cast and crew in the music room of Ashton Court Mansion on Sat just gone - Day Two of the shoot of short film Age of Quorum.

I love a (brief) morning briefing of a shoot day because -if done right- it can galvanise the crew, welcome new crew members, clarify the plan -including any health and safety notes- and stave off misunderstandings and assumptions that could scupper us later on…

Not every shoot day benefits from this - but most do. (as long as they are brief ;)

Yomi did a sterling job of conveying the purpose of our day on Sat - and the mansion was a terrific space to work in.

More from this project in due course…

First AD of the Parcel Delivery Service:

So, away from the glamour of screenings and award ceremonies, I've spent much of December delivering parcels for Evri (and no i don't know why you didn't get that thing yet... :P)

Also, having scheduled feature films etc, organising and carrying out a parcel delivery route isn't too stressful (unless there's an appointment afterwards - never ever book a timed thing for afterwards...)

It's certainly not as fun as filmmaking, but it's good to be out and about, have some money coming in, and I've met some super friendly people - delivery drivers don't seem to fit into a particular type; it's a wide variety... (off all the trades I'd like to be a fly-on-the-wall off: Scaffolders would be it. Scaff guys fascinate me...)

I've also got some first hand experience of how ruthlessly efficient app-based work can be (for the employer i mean)... and cracked (then repaired) my phone screen - twice :/ There must be a lesson in there somewhere... by @oliverfilmm

The Joy of Screenings:

One week ago I had the pleasure of attending a Cast and Crew screening of 'DarkGame', which has since been released on Netflix. Obvs not every shoot gets a screening (the additional cost of doing so at the end of post-production can be intimidating) so I'm grateful to Tom George (Producer) & Happy Hour for making it happen :)

[And, fortunately, the copious amounts of work done in post had served to elevate what we'd shot to glue it together wonderfully...]

It was lots of much fun to catch up with the gang - and see the film on the big screen: a terrific way to end the year. by @oliverfilmm
