I haven’t made a real instagram post about any show that I’ve worked on in SIX years. None of the processes have compared - until I get an unexpected email about working on a show described as “Deadliest Catch meets The Lighthouse”.

A life changing summer surrounded by friends who are just as hungry as you are to make art that truly matters, to produce an end result that is truly only as sharp and captivating as the process it takes to get there. It felt like catching lightning in a bottle - but this wasn’t luck - it was so intentionally built by these brilliant minds that I’m so incredibly lucky to call collaborators and now dear friends. Every win was a win for the team. Every discovery worth diving into - every idea worth dissecting.

If nobody liked it, if nobody saw it, it truly didn’t matter: we were so incredibly proud of what we had created and even more so of the process we took to get there. And that’s an incredible place to be as a company. Soon we found out we weren’t the only ones who saw something special aboard The Shrike.

17 crates in over a dozen different configurations, a giant 5 person crab puppet, and 115+ cues in 55 minutes is insanity, but I have never felt so connected to an entire team during a run. We had each others back in a way I hadn’t experienced in a very very long time, and every night, I truly felt like the luckiest person in the world.

It takes precision, grit, and intentionality, but a rehearsal room that is safe, where everyone is encouraged and valued as a true collaborator and an intentional piece of the whole, where getting it right matters more than being seen - it’s such a rare environment to find, but that’s where the extraordinary is created - and it’s so possible. And now I know I’m not alone in thinking so. And the best part? People felt it. They leaned in, they gasped, they cheered. And wow does it give me hope: there’s a growing craving for that kind of process out there.

Audiences feel it - they know the difference. And so do we. And Breach is proof.

“Thoughts sitting alone on my futon at 11pm with 30 @chickfila nuggets + a milkshake” (abbreviated for Instagram, but also still somehow long enough that this is part 1 of 3, continued in the comments)

that’s the title.

After pouring out the blessings and some of the most painful bruises of the last 2 years, someone I am rapidly growing more and more fond of quoted the brilliant poet @rudyfrancisco and said to me with eyes sparkling, “You have the audacity to be beautiful even on days when everything around you is ugly”.

I brushed it off in the moment, but their words cut like a knife through the barbed wire I had placed around the small sprout that was starting to blossom again, diving deep into my mind, deciding to make their home there, like an audience settling in, back from an intermission, wide eyed and ready for more. The words ricochet in my head, settling in my heart as one of the sweetest compliments I may have ever received.

Soon, more joined them: sparking a wildfire of words said by people who have loved me at my weakest points this year, most often at times when I was full of anxiety, unsure of taking any sort of step at all, let alone a step forward:

“Yo, you are literally glowing, sis! The Holy Spirit is alive and active in you!”

“I didn’t hire you because you can skate, I hired you because hearts like yours are really really hard to find.”

“I’m so glad you’re a part of this.”

“What you did/said isn’t normal at all. But it should be.”

“I feel bad, not for you, but for those who decided hiding a lamp like yours under a bushel instead of letting it shine would somehow give them an edge”

“HEEEEEEEYYYYYY!!! My daughter, my daughter, you are loved beyond all measure.”

“We not only get to do this: you were made to do this.”

“You’re not missing anything”

“You are exactly who and where you need to be, and for that I’m thankful”

🔺Exactly one month ago, three boys and their director went about their Wednesday with a little piece missing. Red closed 1 month ago yesterday, and I thought by now that I’d be able to put into words what it meant to me, but I still can’t get it quite right.
🔺I have never been more proud of a piece. I have never been more proud of a cast - one that had literally every obstacle thrown at them and came back somehow more determined and sharper than before. I have never been more proud of a stage manager - one who would do anything to make sure we had what we needed. I have never been more proud of designers and artists - taking time out of their busy schedule to give time to this little two person show and immediately match the passionate, creative charge that we had sparked in the room. Thankful for Lauren for capturing Red so beautifully. I have never been more proud of a space - we started with a literal blank canvas in a blank art gallery and created a masterpiece - a playground - in less than 24 hours before opening.
🔺I always believed great theatre is created when you collaborate and make informed creative decisions together, and I have never been more certain of that now.
🔺I am so proud of this team. I wish I could do everything with them, forever, but that’s not how this works. That’s the beauty of live theatre. No performance is ever the same. No team is ever the same. One element changes, and it becomes an entirely different show. It is a living, breathing, evolving being. And sometimes, you get lucky enough that you create pure magic. Meet Olivia, our incredible Stage Manager

Olivia von Edeskuty (she/her) is a Twin Cities-based director, designer, and educator passionate about the power of storytelling to foster empathy, social change, and inclusion. She has collaborated with theatres, schools, and nonprofits across the Midwest and is thrilled to join Third Space Theater and this phenomenal group of artists and friends for this year’s MN Fringe! Olivia holds a BFA in Directing from Nebraska Wesleyan University and is the founder of Common Creators, a collaborative arts nonprofit. When she’s not in rehearsal, Olivia enjoys hiking with friends, spending time with her nieces and nephews, reading new scripts, and blocking dream shows in imaginary venues—often with a fun iced drink in hand. life lately

1) neurofeedback therapy round 2 electric boogaloo: last summer I did neuro as well and this summer we are back at it again full send. Living with C-PTSD is not easy and we are praying that this helps inch us closer to the goal of “getting the old Olivia back” where flashbacks and panic attacks will eventually be things of the past.

2-3) focusing on joy - this week it was @5sos and lunch with Eden and “Dabid” making sure I laugh as much as possible

4) the best belated wedding surprise from @lakailtd - a new pair of Riley 3 Highs and other gifts for @dedeskuty 🤯 thank you!!

5-6) homemade momos and @barnesandnoble picnics

7) I’ve spent more time in my bed this summer than ever - reminding myself that resting now so I can give my absolute best later is so much better than running on empty

8) my neuro appts are right by @oliviasorganiccafemn - dates with crispy chicken sandwiches and chocolate chip pancakes that are better than my wildest gluten free dreams
