For three years now, I’ve told myself that time is the only thing that will heal. I’ve tried to find refuge in the belief that something will eventually ease the pain of losing someone so special. But the truth is that with time the pain has only deepened as I think about how different life would be if you were still here.

I miss your little gremlin giggles, perfectly timed jokes, mature perspective, intentional listening, warm hugs, unconditional love, and capability to make growing up as fun as being a kid.

I once read that “grief is just love that has nowhere to go.” Today, I accept that I will always carry your love within my heart, but I also know that in order to grow, I must learn to share some of that love with the rest of the world—because it could use so much more of it now. I’m striving to be half the person you were in my everyday life… because that’s what Kate Bethune would do.

Thank you for being the best friend I could ever ask for. I miss you today, I’ll miss you tomorrow, and I’ll miss you for the rest of my life. But I promise to never forget that you are always with me, no matter where I go.
