Whiskers 5/15/2006 - 8/24/2026 💘

On my second birthday, a family friend’s cat had a litter of kittens, so we went to meet them in all their tiny, slimy glory. That was the day I met my first best friend.

I fell in love with Whiskers immediately. She was the smallest and sassiest of her siblings, and I somehow knew she was my cat. A few weeks later, we brought her home, and she never really left my side. She slept with me every night and was there through every chapter of my life. I was amazed by how much she took care of me, even though she was supposed to be my baby.

I knew this was probably going to be her last summer with us. She made it to 20!! I just hoped she would hold on long enough for me to come home and say goodbye. Last night, after moving out of my college apartment, I made it home and got to have one last sleep beside her. This morning, cuddled up together on the couch, she died peacefully in my arms. She somehow knew to stay just long enough to see me through the end of school into the beginning of my adult life.

I couldn’t have asked for a better best friend or companion. She was known for being a little wild, a little sassy, and very territorial over me, but she was my sweetest little runt of the litter. So much of my childhood is made up of milestones and memories that she was there for. She grew up alongside me, and I grew up alongside her.

I hope she’s somewhere now, frolicking and running around like she used to. I hope she knows how deeply she was loved, and how grateful I am that I got to be her person.
