As one daughter departs for Australia, the other confronts the unspoken weight of staying behind.Sharing the trailer for Parting ✨ Screening at @dublinfilmfestival on Feb 26th at the beautiful @lighthousecinema.I self-funded this film last year not knowing where it would land. It’s since premiered at @galwayfilm, screened at @belfastfilmfestival, and now DIFF. ‘P Stands for Paddy’ Music Video is out now! So much fun directing this BANGER of a first single for @absolutelilt @heavenlyrecordings 🪩🪩🪩The idea was to take the Father Ted ‘Lovely Girls Competition’ (peep the sandwich being measured!) and completely flip the gaze, while keeping the things funny, sexy, and with a healthy dose of Irish specificity. I think there’s a realllll hilarity and absurdity to how enthusiastically we (society, and in Ireland) reward men for the bare minimum lol, and this video was about exploring that in a fun way through the character of Johnny. Grateful to the incredibly talented cast and crew who were up for all of it, every step of the way. The most special time was had at @storyhouseireland lab. We spent a week developing, sharing, and pitching our feature idea, and listening to insights from incredible filmmakers we’ve admired for a loooooong time. Got to do it all alongside an incredibly talented and sound group, which made it even better, with much generosity, perspective, and 10/10 energy. It was a pleasure chatting with Olivia McLaughlin – an Irish writer, producer and director of music videos, commercials and films based between London and Dublin – about her professional debut Parting, premiering at the Oscar®-qualifying Galway Film Fleadh, where she was nominated for the Bingham Ray New Talent Award. Parting then went on to screen at DIFF, where it received a Discovery Award in association with Screen Ireland. The film has since won a Silver Award for Best Direction at the 2025-26 Shark Awards. DIFF Discovery Award Winner 2026. What the hell! Such an honour to be among such an incredible group of nominees and past winners at the @dublinfilmfestival! Thank you so much to the judges and the amazing DIFF team.Two years ago I quit my full-time job to freelance and make more space for directing. One year ago I made a film with my entire savings and the generosity of talented friends - not knowing if it would ever see the light of day. And it has! It feels like the very beginning of a long journey, but moments like this are deeply encouraging. Nothing but love to those who have been part of it 🫶Jessie Buckley received a special mention for this award in 2018, so doing the maths - let’s see where 2034 takes us xx by @olivia_mc_laughlin
