Alyson has inspired me so much over the years to invest my time + energy into community care & self care!
With her support & commitment to our trade, I've been able to gift so many clients, friends and family her amazing esthetician & hair care services. What initially drew me to her services was the utilization & integration of low-toxin products. We both value offering the products we use in our day to day to our clients, because we know the power of the shift! I have felt so seen and supported by her over the years, she has truly seen me grow so much - I used to do my college homework and business planning in her salon chair many years ago🥹

🍂🧙‍♀️🤎this has been my average day to day for the last 4 years!

i truly am amazed at how time has flown, how much growth everyone is going through - internally and internationally. one thing that has kept me solid is my business. at times it's felt like too much (like when I was still in college), now i just feel a general sense of gratitude most days. the privilege i have had to create the services i offer and the network i work with is something ill always hold so much respect for. i know not everyone gets the opportunities or tools needed to do this consistently for years. i know this isn't the only business/service I'll offer too, that's what gets me really excited. there's still so much more to do and so many more moments to just be in. okay just wanted yall to know life feels like a dream and i love what im doing and i hope you all are flourishing and feeling well!!

this next phase of business & life is calling for more expansion & boundaries , instilling / enacting values & maintaining the workplace environment that's been created!!

- Have you ever wondered what the modern world would be like if we started incorporating a bartering/trading system again?

my mom and i have gone no contact more times than i can count lol , however our bond is the strongest it's every been. decolonizing means repairing relationships to me so I can continue to love my people and uphold the values i stand on. we do not agree on everything however i know that she inspires me to continue speaking up and im thankful that we have had a lot of productive conversations, 💝 may we continue to have the conversations our ancestors couldn't have, may we leave this world better than we found her. im excited to keep growing up with you!!!! by @oliviaa.marron

as our trip comes to an end, I realize that traveling has been my greatest teacher ❤️

it's had me thinking and feeling so much. who am I to explore the world while so many are suffering?

whether that's because of a disability, genocide, forced poverty, etc, I've shed real tears quite a few times throughout this trip as I wish everyone could experience traveling.

is it just to travel in such a broken world?

another aspect of this that has me in my feels is the fact that I got here.

as someone who went to juvie 3 times and was put into foster care at 15, I could've had a very different life than I do now.

thank god I had this experience though because I got to see first hand how the system is designed and how it works. I got to vow to myself and people around me that I would fight to dismantle this capitalist, exploitative system. while it's such a fucked up system in my eyes, it's sadly working the way it's supposed to.

so I have to give myself a big hug and recognize that I did it. of course with the support of so many who encouraged me to choose a better life.

im a business owner, a student, a partner to the most amazing person, a daughter, a sister, a friend to so many beautiful people, a life long explorer, a survivor and so much more now because of everything I went through.

and everything I've gone through has got me here.

in Mexico, a country I admire so much, with people that truly make my heart sing and a land so beautiful I can't believe my eyes.

i will cherish this first trip out of the US for the rest of my life. by @oliviaa.marron

Monte Albán 🤯

While it's unfortunate that slave labor was likely enforced to achieve the completion, the way this community was able to thrive for over 1,500 years is truly amazing. The Zapotec capital was literally hand carved out of this mountain.

Not only were they able to thrive; they aligned their temples with the 5 cardinal directions and the North Star.

I admire that the earth and her natural elements were not only resembled through this architecture, they were widely celebrated! Whether it was the equinox, the zenith, the solstice, people gathered here to honor and celebrate. One of the buildings exactly aligns with the zenith and when it occurs, light illuminates the room through the hole in the ceiling!

human sacrifice was very prominent here and it was believed by the Zapotecs that death was the beginning of the rest of your life. Traditionally, one way these sacrifices took place was to ensure a good season full of plentiful crops and to be chosen for the sacrifice was a symbol of honor and dedication to the community.

Typically, those who were sacrificed began this initiation by drinking heavily or taking a heavy dose of mushrooms. Then after singing and dancing, a large cut was made near the ribs and the heart was ripped out of the persons body. The brain usually has activity after this so you can imagine what that experience would've been like for the individual giving their life for their people.

Our tour guide, Miguel, explained that human sacrifice is still prominent today and cultural relevance is key to understanding/respecting the Zapotecs way of life. For example, people in the "US" sacrifice their lives to fight for their country, samurai's preform seppuku and around the world there are still many prominent examples.

Miguel has been going to Monte Albán for his whole life as his father started the guide business! He has decades of knowledge about this sacred place under his belt and to learn from him was truly such a gift. taken in Monte Albán by @oliviaa.marron
