things i’ve learned from travelling alone at 19…

* doing things alone feels awkward for about five minutes, then you realise nobody cares and it becomes completely normal. go to the café, book the class, take yourself out for lunch.
* stay in busy, well-lit areas, especially when you’re out alone at night.
* always be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to what’s happening around you.
* keep your phone charged and make sure someone you trust knows roughly where you are.
* don’t be afraid to ask for help if something feels off.
* trust your instincts. if a situation or person makes you uncomfortable, leave.
* you become so much more confident when you realise you can figure things out yourself.
* take yourself somewhere nice instead of waiting for someone else to be free.
* you don’t have to spend every second doing something. sometimes walking around with no plan is the best part.
* plan how you’re getting back before heading out, especially at night.
* independence doesn’t mean you have to do everything alone or put yourself in uncomfortable situations just to prove you can.

you don’t need to have everything figured out to start doing things on your own. you just need to be willing to try.
