Hair is incredibly potent. Its root follicles, fed by tiny blood vessels, lie invisibly under the skin, associating it with interior, involuntary fantasies, thoughts and longings
Hair carries DNA and thus codes race, ethnicity, and gender, but the cut or characteristics of a head of hair can also reveal individuality or conformity, freedom or inhibition, even religion, profession, or political persuasion
Once covering our animal selves, hair is exquisitely sensual and magnetic. There is pleasure in stroking hair, feeling its weight and texture, combing it, decorating it. A woman brushing her hair, knotting it, letting it cascade in a sign of receptiveness, running her fingers through her hair: all of these have become eternal images of beauty, fertility, seduction, creativity, spiritedness and grace

After having participated in the Garrison Art Center’s mentorship program these past 3 years, I’m proud to present the culmination of my creative endeavors over these past few months. This is a 4ft x 4ft painting embodying a theme that is of utmost importance to me and that I find deeply inspiring on a very spiritual level. I have been working with and developing this idea, a concept that is so holy and precious to me, as a force for and source of connectivity. Making this painting was a process of consecration for these sentiments that I hold so near and dear to my heart, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share it.
I began to paint, truly, in 2020. At the beginning of the pandemic, when I could no longer attend my many dance classes, I found myself terribly lost. I had trained in the art of ballet intensively about 15 or so hours weekly, and as this outlet was then inaccessible to me, I had too much free time. My very encouraging and tolerant parents suggested that I muralize my then blank bedroom walls, and I haven’t looked back since—I love the feeling of making something larger than myself, and have found a passion greater than any other in painting💌 taken in Garrison Art Center by @oliviaaflanagan

Symbols of metamorphosis, change, transition, comfort, and cultivation of creativity. The tail end of a long, strange semester… being an artist and such in the illustrious metropolis of San Francisco. omw back 2 New York now, meditating on the mystery of the way life just keeps going back and forth… East Coast to West Coast, sun to snow… connectivity to estrangement… and everything in between.
