Four years ago, I decided I was in the mood to adopt a tiny senior dog. And then I saw Celine Dion. Four pounds. Eleven years old. And named after one of my favorite artists. I thought, oh my god
 she has to be mine.

She came from a rough breeder situation and had spent most of her life without the love, safety and comfort every dog deserves. She wasn’t always affectionate or the kind of dog who needed to be touching you. But somehow, we found each other.

She became my shadow and my best friend. Always nearby, usually laying in her little bed, watching everything I did. Once a day, she’d get a random bout of zoomies that made me happier than I can explain. She became a world traveler and lived more in her last few years than I imagine she ever thought possible. Most importantly, she finally knew what it felt like to be safe. To have a home. To be loved.

Yesterday, in her final moments, Cece crawled into my arms, rested her head on me, and went. It was the greatest gift she could have given me. After all these years, my little girl who never cuddled chose her very last moments to cuddle me. It felt like her way of telling me that it was okay to let go.

Cece didn’t always show her love in obvious ways, but I knew she loved me. And God, did I love her.

We found each other late in her life, and having to leave one another is one of the greatest pains I’ve ever felt. But I keep reminding myself that for the last few years, she got to be someone’s baby. She knew she was safe. She could close her eyes and sleep peacefully knowing nothing bad was going to happen to her. She finally knew love.

I’ll miss my tiny shadow. Her perfect ears. Looking over and seeing her tucked into her bed watching me. Just knowing she was there.

I would have given anything for more time, but I’m so grateful that somehow, out of all the people and all the dogs in this world, we found each other.

I love you so much, Cece. What an honor it was to be your person. đŸ€đŸŒˆ #adoptdontshop by @oliviacaridi

With a heavy heart, the time has come to say goodbye to our Sweet 16-year-old dog, Adam. Adam was a Water Boy. No pool for him
he loved Barton Creek, a pond, or sprinkler. We named him Adam in 2009 when Adam Lambert did not win American Idol (as I thought he should have). So we found a jet black haired Chinese Crested on Craig’s List and he became part of the Austin based family. Goodbye Adam. We loved you very much. taken in Nashville, Tennessee by @oliviacaridi

gosh, it's bittersweet to write this.

my nana has gracefully passed on. she nearly made it to 99, and i loved her very much.

over the past five years, she’d become one of my best friends. when i moved back to nyc for grad school, i started visiting her every sunday. i'd sit on the couch with her for hours at a time, and she'd sit in her red chair. i'd walk in and she'd yell, "get the bubbles!" we'd share a bottle of champagne, which she didn’t even like, but she knew that i did. and she'd want the gossip, not that i had much of it. sometimes i was just making it up. she wanted to see photos from my travels, or get help fixing some sort of technology in her apartment, or just talk about life. my biggest regret is not prioritizing crochet lessons (she made blankets for everyone) – she would only teach a lefty. we talked about it once, but i didn’t make it happen.

those few hours with her over the past five years truly were highlights of my week.

she could talk and talk and talk. she was smart as a whip, loved reading and crosswords, and loved watching documentaries and dr. phil. bring up a time in history, and she could tell you about it! she was a new yorker through and through. she was an incredible cook - she visited austin for 3 months at a time every year when i grew up, and she had dinner on the table every night (always some form of pasta or chicken cutlets, where i got my love of schnitzel). she preferred sipping on a titos vodka. she was class through and through, and you never saw her without her lipstick and pearls. she had a persistence in life and family that truly was unmatched. a brilliant mother, wife, sister, friend, grandmother, & great grandmother.

rest peacefully, nan. i'll miss you. by @oliviacaridi
