sweet year 7.

Dear 5.13.19,

It’s been over 12,785 injections,
256 Dexcom changes,
and 473,045 extra decisions
since I’ve seen you.

Officially, 1/3 of my life has been consumed by a diagnosis of being extra sweet.

To grieve your health is a slow, difficult pill to swallow.

7 years of no days off. 7 years of my own body constantly retaliating on itself. 7 years of social ignorance, sleepless nights, needles, appointments, labs, mental math, medical bills, burnout, alarms and the deep fears of “what if.” Emotional and physical highs and lows. The realization that no matter the holiday, time of year, or milestone, I will always be sick.

7 years of learning, advocating, loving, and ever adapting. Having your own life in your hands everyday earns you such deep appreciation for a delicate life and body.

A diaversary is not meant to dwell on burden, but rather to celebrate resilience.

To see 7 more birthdays, to thrive in school, to be able to work, and live to the fullest, is owed to my humans. The ones who ask questions, learn how to carb count, carry candy, sit with me and tell me stories when I’m low, woken up to my alarms, take the wheel when I’m unable to drive, help with injections, sit beside me at the doctors, and take my moody highs with a grain of salt. A reality no one asks for, and still my humans always show up. I thank you for granting me with continuous, unconditional support through it all. I love you. I love you. I love you.

To the 14 years I had of adequate, mindless health, I hope to meet you again someday. A hope for a future of all type 1 diabetics and families to access and experience a reality of normalcy one day.

I am so grateful to be here.
