Ol Jogi Wildlife Conservancy was established more than over 60 years ago in the location known for having the most diverse amount of large mammal species on the planet.

In 1980, Ol Jogi became the second private rhino conservancy to be established in Kenya. This sparked a flow of significant efforts that have helped preserve the biodiversity of this unique landscape.

Africa’s best-kept secret, @oljogi, is a private home offering one of the most exclusive property experiences on the continent. It’s a design masterpiece with a style all its own, filled with museum-quality art.

But the real treasure is the wildlife. An underground tunnel takes you from inside the house straight to a hide at the watering hole. Imagine being a few feet from a herd of buffalo or an endangered black rhino, close enough to see the marks on its skin and hear its breath, in complete safety, favourite drink in hand.
Ol Jogi has been a rhino sanctuary since 1980 and is the largest in East Africa.

At Ol Jogi, ecosystem engineers are continuously shaping the landscape through their movement and behaviour. Certain animals influence vegetation, soil, and habitat structure, thereby affecting every other species in the ecosystem. These processes are monitored across the conservancy to ensure long-term ecological balance.

· Elephants — alter woodland structure through browsing, cycling nutrients and movement patterns.

· Giraffes — influence canopy vegetation and contribute to seed dispersal.

· Buffalos — shape grassland composition through grazing pressure.

· Termites — enrich soil and create microhabitats that support plant growth.

Ol Jogi strives to be a leading model for private conservation, guided by relentless efforts to pioneer innovative methods and techniques that protect wildlife and empower local communities.

Set beneath a granite kopje beside Swara, just a two-minute stroll from Main House, Gerenuk brings together warm timber, soft cream interiors and views towards the waterhole. The two, Gerenuk and Swara, share a shaded verandah, offering a welcoming place to gather while retaining the privacy of separate suites.

Beneath a soaring thatched ceiling, a four-poster king-size bed is draped in flowing ivory fabric. Tall windows follow the curve of the bedroom, bringing the gardens into view and filling the space with natural light. Upholstered wooden armchairs, patterned cushions, a circular pedestal table and a richly detailed writing bureau give the room its personal character, while a deep cream rug adds softness underfoot.

Two bathrooms and a dressing room provide generous space. In the bathrooms, dark timber poles bound with rope frame colourful stained-glass scenes of gerenuk and a hornbill among green foliage and red flowers. Above the broad inset bath, the long-necked antelopes echo the cottage’s name. Polished wooden vanity furniture, oval mirrors and warm golden tiles continue the natural palette, with a dressing table and delicate flower-shaped lamp adding thoughtful detail.

A timber-panelled refreshment area houses coffee-making facilities and a minibar, making it easy to enjoy an unhurried morning before stepping onto the verandah. Whether reading beside the windows or watching wildlife gather at the waterhole, Gerenuk offers a comfortable, quietly distinctive place to return to.

Meet Your Team: Justus Likoko.

Justus joined Ol Jogi in October 2023 as Central Operations Room Supervisor. From coordinating rangers in the field to monitoring wildlife movements, he helps keep our teams connected and ready to respond.

Each morning begins with checking cameras, radios and fences, reviewing overnight footage and ensuring information reaches the people who need it. The work calls for close attention, clear communication and quick decisions.

Using @earthrangertech and tracking data from collared lions, Justus helps identify when predators approach livestock bomas. By alerting herdsmen and coordinating field teams, he helps prevent conflict and protect both wildlife and livelihoods.

Behind every radio call is someone listening. For our rangers, wildlife monitors and neighbouring communities, Justus and his team provide that vital connection.

At Ol Jogi, the birdlife of the conservancy reflects both the diversity and health of the ecosystem, as bird populations are often used as indicators of environmental change. With over 400 species recorded, birds occupy multiple ecological roles, from predation to seed dispersal and insect control. Here are four bird species often spotted at Ol Jogi, in addition to our vultures and guinea fowl.

· Secretary Bird — a specialised ground hunter.

· Kori Bustard — the heaviest flying bird in the world.

· Lilac-breasted Roller — known for its colour and flight patterns.

· Von der Decken’s Hornbill — commonly observed around the Main House, contributing to seed dispersal.

Meet Bella, one of @oljogi much-loved orphaned rhinos.

Having lost the protection and care of her mother, Bella’s survival has depended on the dedication of her human carers, who have stepped in to provide the nurturing, specialised care and security that a young rhino needs. At Ol Jogi, raising an orphaned rhino is an extraordinary commitment, requiring patience, veterinary expertise, careful monitoring and a deep understanding of natural behaviour. Bella represents both the vulnerability of these remarkable animals and the importance of giving orphaned wildlife a second chance at life.

When Bella is strong enough and has developed the skills and independence needed to survive on her own, the aim is to reintroduce her into the wild, where she belongs.

Tucked into a secluded garden just a two-minute walk from Main House, Colobus Cottage offers a quiet retreat beneath a thatched roof. Close to Baboon and Vervet, it allows friends and family to stay nearby while enjoying their own private space.

Inside, a high ceiling lined with wooden poles follows the curve of the bedroom, with a flowing white canopy suspended above beds that can be arranged as a European double or twins. Warm textured walls, patterned upholstery and a wooden writing bureau give the room a welcoming, personal feel. A colourful wildlife painting brings the landscape indoors, while tall windows look out onto the surrounding greenery.

The cottage’s namesake appears in the bathroom’s stained-glass window, where black-and-white colobus monkeys perch among leafy branches. Timber poles bound with rope, a stone vanity and a wooden-framed mirror continue the natural textures. A walk-in shower and a separate dressing room complete the suite.

Outside, steppingstones lead across the lawn beneath mature trees, creating a peaceful setting to return to between adventures on the conservancy.

Today, Kenya is making a major long-term investment in conservation, and KRRE is honored to be part of that future vision.

For decades, individual sanctuaries played a critical role in saving Kenya’s black rhinos from extinction, but now continued recovery requires partners to come together more than ever. Through the Thamani Asili PFP initiative, long-term conservation funding will support work across Kenya, including KRRE’s mission to expand secure habitat for black rhinos.

It is a powerful example of what becomes possible when conservation moves beyond individual projects and toward a shared, long-term vision for entire landscapes.

You can support our work by sharing KRRE’s new film, following our journey, or reaching out to learn more.

Never leave a man behind. When Solomon’s knee injury threatened his race, his teammates stepped in to share the load, including his 22 kg pack. After months of training, they crossed the finish line together.

The annual TUSK Wildlife Ranger Challenge brings teams together across Africa to celebrate rangers’ strength, skill and teamwork, raising vital funds for their welfare, equipment, training and frontline conservation work.

Huge congratulations to Solomon Meshami, Sydney Nompoyo, Joseph Sinore and Joseph Eregea for completing the 21 km challenge at Lewa. Provisional results placed our Lion Landscapes/Ol Jogi team sixth at Lewa and second among the Laikipia teams.

Thank you to the entire training group, all of our supporters, Lion Landscapes and Henry Vilas Zoo. An achievement built on strength, determination and looking after one another.
