today we had our first big outing to a shopping centre in a while. first, we went to the park across the road and Ollie had some off leash time. Ollie had a great time however he did run up to two on lead dogs at the end (100% my fault, i should have leashed him immediately). the shops were very busy with running children, lots of shoppers, prams, trolleys, scooters. considering how little PA we’ve done recently he did really well in the shops.

wins:
- while in the shops and vested he completely ignored a screaming child who was about two metres away from us, directly behind him. there were other kids with her and also a scooter (yes in the middle of the indoor shops) and he remained focused on me
- only did drive by sniffs a couple times on shelves in the grocery store (we had got to the point of zero sniffing but we’re out of practice so 2-3 sniffs is a win)
- only drive by sniffed a few people
- left a mint on the floor when asked
- recalled out of sight at the park
- did a nice down stay
- did DPT on cue
- heeled next to a trolley
- didn’t get mad at a dog for stealing his toy
- walked past a leashed dog into the shops, didn’t react to it at all
- waited to enter the shops til i said we could go in (i never consistently asked him to do this in early training so it’s a new behaviour)
- heeled for a while in the big open area of the shops, something he could never do before

things to work on:
- licked a suspicious liquid on the floor 😭
- pulled to leave the shops (he is always excited entering and exiting)
- ran up to on leash dogs
- sniffed a weird stain on the floor
- sniffed people’s legs a couple of times when they were within touching distance
- would not lie down on cue without a lure. i am going to talk to the vet because this could be pain related
- didn’t heel consistently

overall, i will continue outings like this as long as i see improvements in behaviour. he did better than the last outing i took him on, so that’s a good sign. otherwise we will pull back if things get worse. i do need to train more in easier environments regardless but being disabled makes it hard to get out so sometimes this is the only option by @olliethemuffin

First time playing fetch in a week due to the heatwave! It was nice and cool this evening so Ollie and I went to the oval. He recalled away from a dog (needed several cues but still!) and did some great sit stays, and then recalled off a running dog immediately! He also ignored two dogs running right beside him until they came and said hello and he said hello back very politely.

I had 3 friends over today that Ollie hasn’t seen for a while and he did really well! He was unsure at first but soon asked for pats and enjoyed the affection. I think he was a bit overwhelmed because he started chewing the carpet which he has pretty much stopped doing. It was really weird seeing him so nervous at home because he is so confident when working now even in busy shopping centres, and he is never fearful at home.

I gave him a snuffle mat and then later a salmon skin (yes he rolled in it) which helped I think. He was able to settle and sleep with them there. He went up to my room at one stage which was very exciting because I thought he was going to have a nap alone but then he came back downstairs so 🥲 He has come so far and I am so glad he is learning to feel more comfortable around people. He even fell asleep!! Sweetest boy ever, and thank you to my wonderful friends who were patient and gentle with him as always 🩷

It was my beautiful boy’s 2nd birthday this week.
In the short time he’s been in my life he has changed it immeasurably. I now leave the house almost every day, enjoy dog walks, am less anxious in public and have something to work towards that’s doable - a fully trained assistance dog.
Even though there have been and are lots of hard things - toilet training, reactivity, barking at home, upset tummies - I would do it all over again because it’s all worth it.
Ollie is the sweetest dog. I love how he sploots everywhere, how he sits right against me for cuddles if I sit on the floor, how crazy he is about his ball, how much he loves to play tug, and how brave he has been in PA training; going to busy shopping centres and catching trains and buses.
In the past few months his confidence has grown exponentially and I would no longer call him a fearful dog. I can’t wait to see the adult dog he becomes. But he’ll always be my baby.

Something a bit different! 👀🎨

Ollie was such a superstar for his tail dye! This isn’t a service I typically offer (in fact, I had never done it before!), but Ollie is an assistance dog in training and a pop of colour can help make working dogs more easily identifiable in public.

Last groom, Ollie’s owner Cate came to me with the idea of dyeing his tail pink. I agreed to give it a crack with zero promises that it would turn out any good, and full warning that I might accidentally dye the whole dog pink! 😅

To my surprise… it turned out perfect 🩷
