Sometimes self-abandonment happens in the middle of conflict.
When we feel hurt, disrespected, unheard, or misunderstood, uncared for our bodies can move into heightened arousal—angst, anxiety, even rage. We may lash out.
We may shut down.
We may stonewall.
We may withdraw from ourselves or from the relationship.
None of those responses mean you’re a bad person. They may be signs that something inside you is overwhelmed and needs your attention.
Your feelings are not the problem.
You can be angry.
You can be hurt.
You can be disappointed.
The work is learning how to stay connected to yourself while you’re feeling those things.
Pause. Breathe. Notice.
Ask yourself:
“What do I need right now in this one moment to center; what choice is aligned with who I want to be?”
You don’t have to abandon yourself to get through conflict.
Sometimes healing looks less like fixing the other person and more like remembering yourself.

You’re not wrong for wanting love and connection.

You’re not wrong for wanting reciprocity, companionship, intimacy, family, friendship, and connection.
Perhaps when you look back at choices you’ve made and think, “I’ve done so many things wrong. I don’t know if I can be a loving partner. I’ve picked the wrong one so many times.” Point Z shame spirals about past choices are not helpful.
—See to Point A.
Remember who you are.

Remember that you are worthy of love & connection simply because you are alive.
Start there.
Sometimes self-abandonment happens because we leave ourselves out of the equation while trying so hard to maintain connection with everyone else.
We overgive.
We overshare.
We overexplain.
We over-apologize.
Sometimes we let people into our lives before they have earned that level of closeness.
And some people are just tourists.
They’re curious about your life. They want to know the latest. They want to know what happened, what went wrong, what’s happening in your relationship, what’s happening at work.
But curiosity isn’t the same as care.
Access isn’t the same as intimacy.
You don’t have to apologize for your existence.
You don’t have to explain every choice you make.
You don’t have to give more of yourself in order to be worthy of love.
Healthy boundaries help us remember who we are—and help us discover who can actually honor us.
So return.
Again and again.
Return to yourself.
Return to your values.
Return to your truth.
Return to your worthiness. www.olufemis-counseling.com. With warmth,

You are worthy of returning to balance, peace of mind, and calmness.
There is so much happening in the world right now. Horrific news. Economic uncertainty. Rising gas prices. Stress seems to be waiting for us everywhere we turn. Sometimes it can feel as though there is nowhere safe to land.
But there is a place you can return to that will always be available to you—and it doesn’t cost you a dime.
Your body.
Your breath.
The present moment.
Grounding practices like this can give your body and mind a few moments of relief from stress, anxiety, and the demands of everyday life. And when you elevate your legs, gravity can help blood and fluid return from your lower extremities toward your heart.
But this practice is about more than circulation.
It is about remembering that you still have the power to live your life with stability, ambition, love, connection, and joy.
You have the power to take it one day at a time.
To breathe.
To pause.
To choose what is right for you and for the people you love.
To return to yourself.
And sometimes, that return begins with something as simple as lying down, putting your legs up, closing your eyes, and breathing for a few minutes.
I’m here doing it with you.
It would be my honor to support you on your path of healing and growth.
Remember: you don’t have to escape your life to find a moment of peace.
Sometimes, you simply have to return to yourself. ❤️.

Sometimes self-abandonment doesn’t look like giving up.
It can look like being strong.
Being responsible.
Taking care of everyone else.
Keeping the peace or the disease to please.
Pushing through.
Saying yes when you’re exhausted.
Ignoring what you need because someone else needs you more and suffering in silence.
And sometimes, you don’t even realize you’ve left yourself out of the equation.
That’s why two words are central to my clinical work:
Return. Remember.
Return to balance, joy, freedom, clarity.
Return to yourself.
Remember your values.
Remember your standards.
Remember your boundaries.
Remember your needs, desires and wants.
Remember to listen to your inner knowing.
Caring for the people you love does not require you to disappear from your own life.
You are part of the equation and you matter.

Sometimes the most meaningful moments aren’t planned.
Sunday evening, I stepped outside to record this message just as a hard rainstorm was moving in. The sky was dark, the rain was beginning, and yet this long ray of light opened above me as I talked.
I’m not here to make it into something supernatural. I simply noticed it.
There was something beautiful about standing there in the middle of an approaching storm, talking about healing, releasing old internalized messages that told us we weren’t enough, and remembering who we really are.
Maybe that’s part of the work.
We don’t have to wait for everything around us to become calm before we begin to heal.
We can find our way through the storm.
We can let the old messages lose their power. What if we processed and healed from centuries of propagandized messages of being wrong. Wrong hair. Wrong language. Wrong body shape. Wrong skin color. Wrong zip code. Wrong job. Wrong for being single parents…..We can remember what was lost before survival. We can return to ourselves to the things that light you up inside. To brilliance. To balance. To worthiness. To creating. To writing. To community. To….

Return. Remember. Rise. Become.

This is a moment by the edge of the ocean I will never forget. This was my 30th and last day in Cape Coast, Ghana, October 2025.
I had been sitting at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean almost every day for three weeks. I had watched the water, listened to it, prayed beside it, and simply allowed myself to be held by its presence.
But I had never seen the waves move like this.
That day, the ocean put on what felt like a spectacular farewell—waves crashing against the rocks with a force and beauty I had never witnessed there before.
I stood at the edge laughing, overwhelmed with joy and gratitude, saying:
“Thank you. Thank you for confirming that I belong. That you see me. That you hear me. That you affirm me.”
I experienced that moment as sacred.
I believe, in my heart of hearts, that the spirits of my ancestors live and breathe in the sacred waters of the Atlantic.
And in that moment, I felt remembered.
Seen.
Welcomed.
Loved.
Sometimes nature speaks to us in ways we cannot explain.
Sometimes we simply know.
And sometimes, after everything we’ve lived through, we are given a moment that whispers:
You belong.
You are seen.
If you heart is drawn to working with me please visit my website. I look forward to the opportunity to support you on your healing journey.

Are you burdened with stress, anxiety, fatigue and carrying trauma in the body? Healing and Letting go is a process it doesn’t happen overnight. Here is one way to unburden by simply coming back to the Earth.
Try stepping outside for 5–10 minutes and walking barefoot in the grass. Slow down. Breathe. Feel the ground beneath your feet.
For centuries, traditional healing practices have recognized the grounding and restorative relationship between human beings and the natural world. Sometimes, unburdening begins with creating enough stillness to hear what your spirit already knows.
And remember: release is a process. You don’t have to let go of everything at once. Keep working at it, gently and intentionally. Understanding support is available.
Three mantras that may help in the journey:
•I no longer carry what does not belong to me. •I don’t require permission to tell the truth about my story. •I can love and still tell the truth about what happened.
You are worthy of freedom and allowed to release heavy emotional burdens. You are allowed to tell the truth. You are allowed to heal.
#NatureBasedHealing #NervousSystemRegulation #ThePowerPath. I am here to walk with you on your healing path. I look forward to the opportunity to support you on your journey of transformation.

Breaking Old Patterned Behaviors of Self-Abandonment
Choosing yourself is not a rejection of love.
It is an expression of love—for yourself and for the relationships you want to experience authentically.
Healing from self-abandonment means learning to recognize the patterns that once helped you maintain connection but may now be costing you your peace, balance, your voice, and your sense of self.
It can mean learning to:
Speak your truth without apologizing for having needs.
Ask for what you want and need.
Set healthy boundaries without being consumed by guilt.
Honor your intuition instead of silencing it.
Give without continually depleting yourself.
Love deeply without losing yourself in the process.
🌿 Stay connected without surrendering your truth.
For many people, the deepest work is moving through the fear that choosing yourself will cause you to lose love, acceptance, or connection.
But healing teaches something different:
You can be loving without overgiving.
You can be connected without abandoning yourself.
You can have boundaries and still be compassionate.
You can speak your truth and still be worthy of love.
Breaking old cycles is a process. It takes courage and understanding support.
Return. Remember. Become.

MY BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE,
WHAT HAPPENS TO A WOUND THAT IS NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED, NEVER TREATED, AND NEVER ALLOWED TO HEAL?
It doesn’t disappear.
It festers.
For generations, we have lived with the consequences of a soul wound created through the trafficking and enslavement of African people and the racial narrative and hierarchy built around it.
And the wound did not end when slavery ended.
It was carried forward—in our families, our communities, our institutions, our wealth and poverty, our opportunities and exclusions, and in the narratives we were taught about ourselves and one another.
What if remembering isn’t about living in the past, but about healing in the present?
As a therapist, I think about what happens when people are expected to heal while the conditions surrounding the wound remain denied, minimized, sanitized, or removed from the very places where we learn who we are—as people and as a nation.
What happens psychologically when an entire society inherits a narrative that is not large enough to hold the truth?
What happens when we are told to suck it up, move forward, and forget—without being allowed to fully remember?
As a whole person mental health counselor, it’s important to exercise the freedom to remember.
The freedom to tell the whole story.
The freedom to seek the truth.
And the freedom to demand repair.
Because reparations are not about living in the past.
They are about repairing what remains unrepaired in the present. Return. Remember. Become. #Durban400 #Reparations CollectiveHealing www.olufemis-counseling.com by @olufemisharp

Lay on your back, bring your legs up onto a wall, gently close your eyes, and breathe slowly for a few minutes. That’s it!
It may look simple, but you’re giving your nervous system a very different message.
When we’re overwhelmed by work, parenting, relationships, responsibilities, or simply too much happening at once, the body can stay in a state of high alert (survival mode). Your heart rate, breathing, muscle tension, and thoughts can all speed up.
Slow, steady breathing can help shift the body toward its calming system—the part of your nervous system associated with rest, recovery, and regulation. Research shows that slow breathing can increase heart-rate variability, support parasympathetic activity, and improve the body’s ability to respond to stress.
And elevating your legs changes the way blood returns through your lower body, while giving you a supported, restful position.
You don’t have to solve the problem right now.
Sometimes the first step is simply helping your body remember:
I am safe enough to slow down.
I can pause and breathe.
I can come back to myself…again & again.
Try it for 3 minutes and notice what changes. See if it’s helpful.

Mental health counseling isn’t about becoming someone new.
It’s about returning to the truth of who you are beneath survival, pain, heartbreak, trauma, and the systems and experiences that have shaped us.
Healing can mean reconnecting with the parts of ourselves that became scattered along the way—and remembering our capacity for embodied peace, balance, calmness, creativity, clarity, courage, service, love, and joy.
This is deep inner —whole-person healing.
Nervous system regulation.
Cognitive work.
Emotional healing.
Spiritual healing.
You are not broken. There is more of you waiting to be remembered.

In Returning to your full self.
In Remembering your purpose.
You Are Returning to your original operating settings.
Sometimes the overwhelm of life pulls us so far away from ourselves that we forget the wonder, creativity, love, possibility, and aliveness we once knew.
And sometimes we simply need a place to sit, be seen, be heard, and be honored while we sort things out.
A place to gain perspective and clarity.
To remember your creative self.
Your loving self.
Your Adventurous self. Your Entrepreneurial self.
The part of you that can still imagine beautiful possibilities for your life.
That is part of the work I do.
I help you develop tools to regulate your nervous system, recalibrate your mind, body, spirit and become more aligned with the life you want to create—with your values, goals, and dreams.
And ultimately, I believe healing is also about returning to an unconditional loving friendship with yourself, with the people you love, and with your community.
Life has to be about more than surviving the day-to-day.
Sometimes we need someone to walk alongside us to remind us of that.
That’s my work!
To help you remember the truth about who you are, to reconnect with what matters, and develop healthy practices that allow you to live more fully as yourself.
You’re not alone. 🌿
