July 9th carries a weight I can’t fully explain, but I honor it every year. In 2008, this was the day we laid my mother, Cathy Mae Johnson-Lomnick, to rest. Her sacrifices, love, faith, and strength became the foundation of who I am. Her life and passing later became part of a larger mission through sepsis awareness, so that her story could help protect other families. In 2011, July 9th also became the day I crossed into Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. and gained my line brother, Gary “I-Rise” Washington. What connected us was deeper than letters. Gary understood what it meant to carry a mother’s love, loss, and legacy. Out of that shared understanding, we became S.O.C. Servants of Change. Cathy gave me the why. Gary gave me a brother who understood the pain. Iota gave us a structure to turn that pain into service. Through sepsis awareness, St. Jude support, mentoring, intake leadership, community service, and brotherhood, their legacies still move through me. July 9th is not just a day of grief. It is a day of purpose, memory, fidelity, and love. For Cathy. For Gary. For the legacy. Still serving. Still becoming. Still carrying them with me. ❤️🤎💛🐎🏹
