Here’s the next page in the RDCBJ. The color of our next month’s Happy Mail is black-and-white and the word of the month is dream. I decided out of the clear blue yonder to create a page in honor of both the color and the word. Ricki mailed the envelopes yesterday, andtribe members have been commenting about how much fun it’s going to be to get it in the mail and get started using it on November 1. What do you think of my homage, please? It’s right there—in glorious black-and-white—on the screen for y’all to view. How many of you think the lady on the bed’s gonna dream about the Black-and-White Happy Mail (BAWHM)? I may make a mini-series based on this idea. The number of magazine cuttings is tempting. Please come back at some point each day between now and the last day of October to see what I may have done gone and done! 🤪 #artjournal #collage #blackandwhite #color #happymail taken in St. Johns by @olynettehanson

Today’s page uses the Dreamsicle Orange paper envelope as a pocket and the second $10 Quarter Coin Wrapper as a tab for the entire page. Also, based on my statement stamp—Create your own reality—l used quite a bit of other goodies to represent the results of my brainstorming. Please notice on the second photo, one of two tags tucked into the envelope. I particularly like the young lady leaning on the front of the now vintage vehicle and the other one with the bicycle; these are from a yearbook. They’re two of three in this post who need some girl time! That’s what’s stamped at the top of their tag. The second tag, revealed in the next photo, contains ages explaining how the girls would like to spend their time! On the back, it’s a journal card, as is the other tag. The girls want to attend sporting events, walk through the sunflowers in the nearby fields, dream of visiting Florence, Italy, and mailing postcards home. They also dream of playing bingo and winning, as well as heading for the zoo and enjoying the giraffes! The girls’ credo, Create a new reality, features beneath it a ticking clock, a reminder that time tends to run away, which leads us to the last bit of information, the time-related affirmative: You go girl, written in Scrabble letters! Finally, see the last photo where you will find the third girl in line with three boys during archery class, the Physical Education class that she’d always wanted to take! BTW, the only remaining OHM is a bit of the mailing envelope & a teeny strip of autumn leaves tissue paper. #ArtJournal #Collage #Serendipity #Reality #Creativity taken in St. Johns by @olynettehanson

This is a two-page spread on a single flash card. Each side is covered with stamps and phrases to do with international mail that travels from one location to another. I am thrilled to be able to say that I have a good many stamps. As I brainstormed, they all hollered to be glued to the flash card, but these rolled like thunder! At the bottom of the first page and at the top of the second page are bits of actual postal service ephemera from Europe—thanks to the vendor, but I can’t remember which one! If you see this, let me know it’s you, please and thank you. In the lower right corner of the first page and along the top of the second page you see that I made a single quote from two different bits I found in @tim_holtz Clippings Sticker Book. “Traveling the world as if this were a traveled road.” In my estimation, that makes for a fantastic and appropriate quotation to use in honor of intriguing and beautiful stamps from countries the world over—not every single country that I had would fit. Applied to envelopes, these stamps took to the road whether they were on a commercial passenger flight or on a flight dedicated to cargo. And just like when any trip comes to the end of the road, somebody’s happy that you’ve arrived! Since this is my page, I’m gonna say that these stamps all came after being happily awaited and joyously received letters. #ARTJournal #PostageStamps #Letters #Road #Flight taken in St. Johns by @olynettehanson

Glory be! Here’s a shot of the pulley that I use is for two of the eight exercises I do twice daily. Physical therapy is helping my right arm move again. In case you didn’t already know, I’d fallen and fractured my right humerus on 09/11, been in the sling until last Monday, a week ago. Been on physical therapy since 10/02 which is paying off daily. The muscles are still a tiny bit sore and have streaky pain now and then when I move through the procedures, but I’m able to do things with my right arm again—reach the microwave door/open button, reach the slot in my triple-size-dorm-room fridge/freezer to pull that door open, and reach all sorts of things in my craft room when I’m creating! Hallelujah! I’ve been told I’m doing quite well for a 78-year-old ol’ lady—nobody at PT calls me that, but I like that ID cause it means I’m still here! taken in St. Johns by @olynettehanson

Hello! Here’s my next page in the RDCBJ. The Maya Angelou quote at the top and the Edgar Allen Poe quote at the bottom are OHM. I decided to use both because I believe they compliment each other and relate to how the lady in the blue dress—see the cropped image for her face as she reaches out . . . to touch the donkey. Will she or won’t she? Go beyond her normal life and experience the beauty of this strange-for-her situation? Yes, I predict that she will become best friends with the donkey in no time flat! I couldn’t resist the homage to The Bricolage Factory, y’all! Being able to have such great fibra, etc., to create with his kept me saying as my fractured right humerus continues to heal. First, a card with a metallic-looking tab, in the front pocket behind the fabric showing soft color in the cutouts. I believe the young lady, seated on the arm of an ornately carved wooden chair, is an early accepter of the telephone. That’s why I used this Virginia Wolf quote. No doubt she knows who she is! On the back, there’s a lovely postcard, including an address to which this card would’ve been mailed—Miss M. Stra . . . at 393 W. Park St, Portland, Ore. For the state, Oregon’s my best guess, per a magnifying glass & zooming in. It’s written on the embossed edge, so it is wobbly & definitely nothing to do with the state of Maine. Also beneath the heading For Correspondence only, there is dim handwriting, possibly erased by the person who started the postcard. Mind change about the message? I can’t make out a single word. Googled the address & found it did exist here in Portland, late 19th, early 20th centuries, in an area beside the current Portland State University campus in SW Portland. As the Internet put it, notable family names associated with the address do not have S as the first letter of their last names. One of these days, I’d like to go to the Oregon Historical Society archives, look up the address, and see what I can learn. I did find out more about the photograph/postcard style, known as a Real Photo Postcard (RPPC). In the early 1900s, this continuous-tone photographic image was printed directly onto photographic postcard paper. In the 1900s to the 1910s, photographers & card makers often pressed or embossed borders into the heavy card stock surrounding the photo. This gave the photo the look of a studio portrait mat or miniature picture frame. Drat, there’s no photographer logo or studio listed. The fall leaves tissue paper is OHM. The pocket is made with a piece of Ricki’s Mom’s rust fabric, stapled to cardstock which is stapled to the page. Second pocket, behind card stock, holds an OHM playing card. I glued a folded piece of journal paper to the back to serve as a journaling card. There’s a sentiment on that paper which is in the same vein as the earlier Woolf quote. #ArtJournal #Rust #Glue #Pockets #Creativity taken in St. Johns by @olynettehanson

Today’s page in the RDCBJ, y’all. I used some OHM— the Orange tag with the heart cut out and the Dave Grohl quote, “No one is you and that is your superpower.” I believe the small playing card with the yellow-green hen on it came from Ricki. The journal card glued onto the back of it came from an online purchase. The huge Orange math flashcards came from Ricki, and I believe the door-knocker-illustrated Opportunity Card probably did as well. The Chicken Little info on flash card 12 explains how to create the cake seen on flash card 13. I can’t remember if it’s from Ricki or the other lady whose family I bought years ago. For this post, the you in Grohl’s quote refers to Hickety Rickety, the yellow-green hen—read the journal card on back of her image card; then read the back of the opportunity card so you’ll know why she’s so happy! Hickety Pickety sees herself as the model for the next chicken character in Walt Disney studio’s next cartoon! She’d love to be as famous as Clara Cluck or the Little Red Hen! If only she could see into her future . . . taken in St. Johns by @olynettehanson

Desmond, Pup, and David’s sister Delphine enjoy a rest upon a neatly folded stack of hand-woven rugs. The three of them were on their best behavior after the monthly photo for the year. Earlier, they played and pounced in mounds of leaves the gardener had left alongside the house. More than once they laughed, completely out of breath, because Pup—bounding and bouncing—stirred up more leaves than they did! Bathed, hair combed, dressed and clean, wearing surprisingly comfortable clothes to pose for the October photo, the children had their best friend there between them. Once the photo had been taken, they would tell their tales of frolicking in the autumn leaves! After all, they had their very own private audience, dear Pup. This is the 10th page in the RDCBJ. The autumn leaves here are from the OHM. I can’t remember where I got the sentence at the bottom of the page, most likely in one of my magazines, a Fall Issue. Y’all know how excited I was when I found that key to use as a tab—the heart!!! #ARTJournal #Orange #AutumnLeaves #Tab #heart taken in St. Johns by @olynettehanson

I hope you’ll find time to read what I’ve written on several cards that go with today’s four pages in the RDCB. Created on a vintage sheet of notepad paper that Ricki had folded in half back towards the binder, it ingenuously provides four pages for journaling. I started with the one you see here first—the “gang”mentioned means the four girls on the front row, Kaye, June, Sally, and Mona, enjoying summer fun at the City Park. Next, these four girls are in the same order on the front row of a high school homeroom photo. I used a tuck pocket to hold it and a card which spells out the girls’ names, the name of their high school, and that they are best friends. The third page has a quote about peace from John Lennon and a photo of the girls from 1944 when they were members of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). Since the girls had learned to fly out of pure curiosity and enjoyment, they applied and were accepted for training to become pilots who transported aircraft between factories and military bases. (That photo, a card from the National WASP Museum, led me to the real names of these pilots. See the card where I wrote their names and the name of the B-17 Flying Fortress behind them in the photo.) For our story, the last page features a black-and-white print of a famous portrait, painted in Florence, Italy, in 1488. The girls in the gang learned of this woman and this particular portrait during their high school Latin class. The teacher had it hanging on the classroom wall—Giovanna Tornabuoni died during childbirth, and her husband commissioned the photo in her memory. The gang members decided unanimously that she would always be their Protector throughout life! That particular ephemera is the only one that isn’t from Ricki and The Bricolage Factory, it’s from my @tinkerlab monthly #arthabitmailclub envelope. #ARTJournal #Collage #LifeStory #bravery taken in St. Johns by @olynettehanson

Here’s my next page in the RDCBJ, which Ricki creates and sells @thebricolagefactory. I really lucked out with an ocean liner, complete with foaming waves, at the top of the substrate. I created the waves below those with heavyweight vellum paper that came in my monthly @tinkerlab envelope—all sorts of creative goodies with how-to hints arrive each month! The lady in the lower left corner came off the envelope itself. I decided she’s some sort of shipping-lane-influencer, something to do with how the waves influence the ship’s trip. If she looks calm, the waves are calm. This one looks almost ready to be ticked off. Zoom in real close. The U.S.S. Sand Dollar crew better be on full alert! The cutout underneath the vellum waves (with the Posca blue lines on them) are from a page in that same envelope. I cut out seven kinds of sand dollars and sprinkled them around on the page before gluing down wave parts. I don’t know any seafaring myths, but I did get real tickled by those words that you see across from her— LADIES CAPE. Why can’t that be the locale name for my ocean setting? Maybe the one I cut out is one of those LADIES? Underneath Ricki’s Mom’s rusty fabric playing the role of rippled sand beneath the waves is another image from the TinkerLab mail—I colored it to look kinda like seaweed, using as many as three different crayons on parts of the image, trying to get a specific look. Doing so made me quite happy, then I covered up at least 8/10 of it! That made me even happier! In fact, I’m thrilled with this wacky-combo mostly real-life-mail creation! Thanks to my ephemeral providers and my brainstorming! PS. The page tab is a sticker of some sort of shellfish! #ArtJournal #Collage #influencer #Brainstormi #arthabitmailclub taken in St. Johns by @olynettehanson

Happy Mail Page, RDCBJ! OHM sentence, Dr. Seuss, “You don’t have to be odd to be number one.” Found a unique photograph, with July 1933 written in the border! Look at that little girl grasping the steering wheel, most likely standing on the floorboard; look at that American flag furled in front of the radiator! I love the oddness & juxtaposition of the girl & the car, size-wise! I like the layers I’ve made. I especially like the cluster I made with a longtime favorite envelope corner, complete with meter 629985’s post mark for $.10 postage, dated October 24, 1974. I read online that first class postage went from $.08-$.10 on March 2, 1974. I also like my tab at the top right. Powell’s City of Books, my second favorite independent bookstore, my first favorite, Lemuria Book Store, Jackson. Mississippi. I like that shiny piece of trash I picked up in Pier Park while walking Lilo weeks ago. I was especially pleased with it because not only could I read the entire word PEACH, I knew that the shiny Orange paper would enhance any OHM piece I placed nearby. Instantly, I realized the shiny paper had given me the girl’s nickname & given name, Penelope “Peach”Potter. Nowadays, Peach’ll tell anybody who’ll listen that when she gets big enough so her feet touch all the pedals in the car & she is able to see beyond the hood, she’ll start training to be a racecar driver. That’s what she’s gonna be when she’s grown up. It all started when she rode into town with her Daddy to shop for her Mama. Daddy pointed out a poster slapped onto the utility pole in front of the service station, advertising an amateur automobile race out at the local horse track. Along with five photos of men, there was one photo of a woman. Peach looked up at her Daddy and said, “That lady must like how the engine makes her feel when she’s roaring around the track! I like it when I’m riding with you. Daddy, I’m gonna drive a race car someday!” Daddy winked & smiled, took her hand, & said, “Come on, Peach. Our shopping ain’t gonna get done without us!” Peach looked up at her Daddy & knew that she never forget how it all started. #ARTJournal #women #RacecarDrivers #daddyanddaughter #brainstorm taken in St. Johns by @olynettehanson
