💙AFRICAN QUEER YOUTH DEFENDING DEMOCRACY💙

Equal Namibia Co-Founder, @omar.vanreenen, gave an impassionate speech at the @athensdemocracyforum. Where they bestowed the next honoree with the @kofiannanfoundation NextGen Democracy Prize.

Omar spoke on how the award helped our movement uplift queer voices to resist democratic backsliding against state-sanctioned homophobia.

Kofi Annan’s legacy was to inspire a generation to believe in the power of inclusive democracy. In this light, Omar reflected on how the award is not just a prize: “It is a torch. A torch lit by the legacy of Kofi Annan, carried forward by young leaders across continents, and passed from one generation to the next. Holding it for the past year has been both humbling and empowering.”

This award recognizes young leaders around the world who show exceptional dedication to promoting democracy and human rights.

This Pride Month, I’m deeply grateful. I look at the opportunities I’ve been blessed with, to build community, to support grassroots LGBTQI+ organizations across the world, to help my country, Namibia, become a more born-free Republic and to uplift young queer people to dream, believe and take-up space.

In many parts of the word, our community continues to face erasure, and many times violent oppression. But I look at the queer-youth on the frontlines finding joy in belonging. And to 6-year old Omar, that means the world. I’m grateful to help create a better society where we all belong. I’m inspired by our communities’ resilience, and grateful for the allies who stand with us in solidarity.

Namibia stands at a defining moment by making HERstory with women leading all branches of government: Executive, Legislature and the Judiciary. The world is watching a country led by women. We are proud of our women in leadership. The deeper question is whether this leadership will widen democracy or merely symbolize it. This moment calls for those in power to expand the dignity for all.

Representation opened the door. Transformation - especially in how LGBTQI+ and sexual and reproductive rights are treated - will determine whether this historic moment becomes a feminist milestone or a missed opportunity.
