At Tamatorizaki Observatory, Typhoon Dolphin turned Ishigaki’s bright tropical coast into something elemental.

Below the lookout, a jagged black outcrop rises from the surf like a stone shisa—part lion, part sea dragon—its bowed head fixed against the Pacific. Waves explode at its base, while the wind tears whitecaps across the horizon. In a place known for coral-blue water and soft tropical light, the storm revealed another Ishigaki: raw, ancient, and unflinching.

Ishigaki has topped Japan's diving destination rankings for years, and the southern side of the island is part of Sekisei Shoko, the country's largest coral lagoon, with around 400 recorded coral species.

Canyons and narrow swim-throughs opening into Acropora gardens with hundreds of damselfish and anthias. An erabu sea krait (seriously venomous) coiled under the rock, clownfish in their anemone, a Moorish idol, batfish at a cleaning station, and a green turtle along the reef edge.
