the flesh covers the bone and they put a mind in there and sand the women break, vases against the walls and the men drink too much
and nobody finds the one but keep looking
crawling in and out of beds. flesh covers
the bone and the flesh searches for more than flesh.

there’s no chance at all:
we are all trapped by a singular fate.
nobody ever finds the one.
the city dumps fill
the junkyards fill
the madhouses fill
the hospitals fill
the graveyards fill

He said, can you hear me, are you sleeping?
She said, will you rape me now?
He said, leave the politics to mad men
She said, “I believe your lies”
He said, there’s a paradise beneath me (this is the life on Mars)
She said, am I supposed to bleed? (this is the life on Mars)
He said, “you better pray to Jesus (this is the life on Mars)
She said, I don’t believe in God” (this is the life)

On my desk is a photograph of you
taken by the woman who loved you then.

In some photos her shadow falls
in the foreground. In this one,
her body is not that far from yours.

Did you hold your head that way
because she loved it?

If I had been born a woman I would certainly have been a prostitute. Since I had been born a man, I craved women constantly, the lower the better. And yet women - good women - frightened me because they eventually wanted your soul, and what was left of mine, I wanted to keep. Basically I craved prostitutes, base women, because they were deadly and hard and made no personal demands. Nothing was lost when they left. Yet at the same time I yearned for a gentle, good woman, despite the overwhelming price. Either way I was lost. A strong man would give up both. I wasn’t strong. So I continued to struggle with women, with the idea of women.
