Thank you to everyone who posted, texted, called and FaceTimed to wish me a happy birthday. My Mom always taught me to count my blessings. As I celebrate 54 years around the sun, I am grateful for family that catches me when I fall, for besties who build me up, for a universe of supporters who make me stronger, and for rich experiences I will never forget. I’m grateful for my big sis Louise surviving cancer and for seeing Ghana with her and my other big sis Clarencia. Ghana recap time! I had the most incredible, spiritual, life-changing experience visiting the Motherland. Touching down with my sisters was like coming home. I returned renewed and ready to take on the world. What I loved most was this wasn’t a typical tourist vacation - it was custom-curated through Africa Embodied and was the perfect blend of culture, connection and beautiful experiences. It felt immersive, intentional and deeply personal. I’m so thankful for the care and thoughtfulness put into making my first Ghana visit phenomenal.

Today I had one of the most powerful experiences of my life. We visited the “Last Bath” - the Assin Manso Slave Market and River Site where captured Africans were forced to bathe for the last time before being taken to the dungeons on the coast of Ghana. 40% of Africans stolen from Northern Ghana died on the way to this site. Others died here, their bodies left in the woods just steps away from this sacred river… or they drowned while washing themselves weighted down by chains. For descendants of the survivors, visiting The Last Bath is a way to pay homage to their sacrifice. It is a cleansing. Still feeling joy about this moment I ran into a girlfriend from Jersey in Cape Coast. I recognized the sound of her voice and that was all it took. We realized we were on a very similar journey in this beautiful country. Can’t wait to catch up back home and compare notes @itstiffjoy!!! My heart is heavy today after visiting Elmina Castle - the largest and oldest slave castle in West Africa. 6 million African captives were brought here over 400 years. 60% of them died before ever reaching the “door of no return.” That’s in addition to those who perished on the journey to Elmina and the middle passage to the Americas and the Caribbean. No words or pictures could ever capture the horror of this place, or the evil that was inflicted on human beings here. We have taken our Ghanaian journey to the Cape Coast region, where my big sis is building a house. We spent a beautiful and moving day at Oasis Beach Resort, just steps away from Cape Coast Castle. It’s where hundreds of thousands of enslaved African were held in dungeons before being shipped to the Americas and the Caribbean. This brutal place was their last experience of their homeland. We did not tour this castle because we plan to visit Elmina Castle today — but viewing these “points of no return” puts the horror of slavery in sharp focus in a way that can’t be erased. I can’t put into words what this day meant to me and my family. To celebrate Ghana’s Independence Day at Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park was incredibly inspiring and spiritual.
