Drawing inspiration from architectural principles in Californian houses, the shading devices applied at Piazza San Marco, and the balconies in Beirut, the Curtain Wall House completed in 1995 in Tokyo, by Shigeru Ban was a case study on how to create continuity between interior and exterior, through the use of a double-height curtain draping the building’s façade. This dissipation of boundaries creates a parallel to traditional Japanese housing while being executed using modern materials and processes. The result is a living façade in continuous response and adaptation to its environment creating a unique atmosphere of openness.
