TAROKO 003In the final stage of our performance the mountain rises from its shadow. Traces of sand slowly become the marble range. As the granules accumulate, the mountain moves between time and states. Water lapping against the base. Fog enveloping the summit. Clouds of dust falling from the peaks. Once the transformation is complete the grains of sand are hand formed into a pile mirroring the range. Morphing back into the rock that seeded the movements. Our project started as field photography in February 2024 at Taroko Gorge. Soon after, on April 3, 2024 a devastating earthquake struck Taroko, the most impactful to hit Taiwan since 1999. The shock sent rocks crashing down from the peaks forming cascading landslides and clouds of debris. Seismic violence that serves as a stark reminder - mountains are motion. Seemingly still, yet never still. Evidence of process. Movements that started before us and will continue after we are gone.The photographs captured in the field are used as a reference for drawings - charcoal, dust, water, and sand take cues from the materiality of the site. The drawings are captured in a video feed sent to an analog video synthesizer and manipulated live. The performance consists of three stages based on varied distance and intimacy to the mountains and materials. Each stage builds up to compositions born from the dialogue between the live drawings and visuals. Accompanying the installation is a score complemented by field and foley recordings. TAROKO 002 In the second stage of our performance the mountain fades back into dust reappearing as slopes carved by the Liwu river. We move past the surface entering the range. Encountering the seismic vibrations echoing through its depths. Using charcoal rock, dust, brushes, and scarper tools the marble slopes are reformed briefly before crumpling into a shadow of the mountain.
