Here is a much better rendition than I can muster these days. This was recorded over 30 years ago with my dad and his friend Hassan Abdel Salam. (My dad is the one gassing him up.) #arabic #poetry #love #mohammadabdelwahab by @omr.ib
One of my earliest memories as a child is my father and his friend recording this song together: “gafnuhu 3allam al-ghazal” (or jafnuhu, if you must) Roughly translated, the title means “his eyelid taught love poetry”, the meaning of which may not be obvious. Likely the most unfamiliar idea here is the use of the masculine to refer to the beloved which was the convention of most 20th century Arabic love songs, especially Egyptian. A direct explanation for this is unlikely. It may simply be a reflection of cultural attitudes of the time, grammatical norms where the masculine is the default gender or simply poetic restraint and universality. Another possible explanation could be that many songs during this period were written for female singers. Next, we have the eyelid “teaching” love poetry. The eyelid is used poetically in Arabic pretty much the same way “eyes” are used in most poetry and love songs. Here it maybe adds a layer of allure and mystery, naming the cause or source instead of the the itself. The verb “teaching” has a similar idea, as though the beloved were so beautiful they were the very reason love poetry exists. It’s a bit similar to constructions in both English and Arabic where we say “I’ll teach him a lesson”. Now for the lyrics: As an American born Egyptian, most of the lyrics went over my head as a child except for the repeated refrain “ya habibi”, which most will recognize without translation. That begins the second half of the song. Colloquial is often a bit trickier to translate, so any notes are welcome. Some words are particularly interesting: (ga7eem/jaħeem) جحيم - synonymous with fire and translated here as “blaze”, we find this word often in the Quran and only meaning hell-fire. (hawa) هوى - love but also desire and in colloquial Arabic, this word also means wind. interestingly, in the Quran, this word strictly refers to base desires or whim, so make of that what you will! (ħusn) حسن - translated here as beauty but can also mean excellence and perfection. this word shares a root with common names such as Hassan, Hussein and Ihsān. Full lyrics and translation in the comments. by @omr.ib
A reading of the poem by Ahmad Shawqi made famous by the song“Ya Garat al-Wadi” (O Lady of the Valley) composed by Mohammad Abdelwahhab and sung by many including the prolific composer. The title of the song version comes from line 10 of the poem and is one of the nicknames for Zahle, Lebanon which Shawqi visited in the 1920s when he was inspired to write the poem, recounting a past love. translation notes: the arabic word هوى (hawa) is often translated as love but can mean desire and passion, so both are used here. an alternate reading of the last line is given this clip: “the day i met you” instead of the more common “a day of pleasing you”. by @omr.ib
“Ya Garat al-Wadi” is one of the most iconic Arabic songs of all time, made famous by the prolific composer and singer Mohammed Abdel Wahab, who selected verses from a longer poem by Ahmad Shawqi—widely considered the greatest modern Egyptian poet. In this clip from a longer 20+ minute performance recorded in Lebanon in 1969—where the penultimate line is repeated several times—Nour Al-Huda delivers the song’s final two lines with pure joy and passion: ‎يا جارة الوادى طربت و عادنى ما يشبه الأحلام من ذكراك O girl of the valley, I’m in ecstasy and Your memory returned to me like a dream. ⸻ ‎مثلت فى الذكرى هواك و فى الكرى و الذكريات صدت سنين الحاك I reimagined your love in memory and restlessness, And the memories are an echo of the years of our story. ⸻ ‎ولقد مررت على الرياض بربوة غناء كنت حيالها ألقاك I passed by the gardens of the lush hillside, Across from where I used to meet you. ⸻ ‎لم أدرى ما طيب العناق على الهوى حتي ترفق ساعدى فطواك I never knew the sweetness of loving embrace Until my arm gently pulled you close to me. ⸻ ‎و تأودت أعطاف بانك فى يدى و احمر من خفريهما خداك And your supple sides leaned into my hands, As their modesty flushed red into your cheeks. ⸻ ‎و دخلت فى ليلين فرعك و الدجى و لثمت كالصبح المنور فاك And I entered two nights: your hair and the darkness, And like radiant morning I pressed my lips to your mouth. ⸻ ‎و تعطلت لغة الكلام و خاطبت عينى فى لغة الهوى عيناك And the language of words ceased—and my eyes Spoke to yours in the language of desire: ⸻ ‎لا أمس من عمر الزمان و لا غد جمع الزمان فكان يوم رضاك There has never been a yesterday or a tomorrow; All of time came together in a day of pleasing you. #poetry #arabic #shawqi #nuralhuda #love by @omr.ib
