The Palace of Coats of Arms—a 20th-century building featuring the architectural style and touches of the 18th and 19th centuries, and known to some as "Dracula's Palace"—now sits in a state of significant disrepair; a victim of the all-too-common trend of shifting locations, it has become a place abandoned and forgotten by time... 2023 archive photo.

The famous "abandoned hotel" in São Martinho do Porto is the former Hotel Parque. Built in 1910 by the emigrant António Rosa, it began as a luxury residence funded by wealth acquired in Brazil. It later became the prestigious Pensão Rosa and a luxurious Belle Époque hotel, before closing permanently in the 1980s and falling into abandonment. Hotel Parque was the epicenter of high society in São Martinho do Porto, renowned for its gardens, terrace, and the iconic "Baile da Chita" (Chintz Ball). Following its closure in the 1980s, the grand building suffered decades of decay and was the subject of several failed restoration projects.

Historical background: Early 18th century – construction of the palace, visible in an engraving dated 1727, featuring a central block and four corner towers topped with spires; 1737 – owned by D. José César de Meneses, a canon of Lisbon Cathedral; 1755 – following the earthquake of November 1st, it was purchased by the Archdiocese and began serving as the summer palace for the Patriarchs of Lisbon, forming the original core of the surviving building; October 24, 1758 – contract signed with various master craftsmen for the construction of a room for the Cardinal-Patriarch of Lisbon based on designs by Mateus Vicente; the same document attributes the design of the palace's western carriage houses and stables, as well as servant quarters near the estate wall, to the same architect; 1818 – the palace housed the Saint John the Baptist Seminary; 1853 – the palace passed into the possession of the merchant Manuel António Pinto da Fonseca—nicknamed "Montecristo"—who altered and expanded the building, demolishing a number of outbuildings and likely modifying the configuration of the towers and adding a lantern to the central dome.

The "brasileiros de torna-viagem" were Portuguese emigrants who left for Brazil in the 19th and early 20th centuries and returned wealthy. They amassed fortunes (the "money tree") and built imposing mansions to display their status. An excellent example of this architecture in the region is the Casa da Castrália (1909).

The enthusiast's mansion this time I arrived too late to document and photograph it in more detail, as it was no longer decay but pure ruin... very dangerous with all the floors collapsing. Even so, I managed to take half a dozen photographs without much editing because the view was magnificent of what little remained.

This time I bring you a photo report of a mansion probably centuries old; each piece, each object... each portrait, everything this mansion had takes us on a journey through time... without knowing many details, I named the mansion Komodo. Eventually, other explorers found the place long before me and therefore also found it much better preserved. Archive photograph, France 2019.

The incredible story of this abandoned sanatorium in Tuscany is impressive;
Mr. Sbertoli was apparently a wealthy and kind man. It is said that he could not bear to institutionalize his mentally disabled son in one of the existing institutions. In 1868, he commissioned the construction of this beautiful mansion on a hilltop and cared for his son there. In his will, he stipulated that an institution be established on the land, where mental illnesses would be treated and researched. The extensive property has been abandoned for over 20 years.

An incredible, abandoned and timeless 18th-century villa, exquisitely decorative, has been partially restored to its former splendor and now awaits its future. A well-known Italian composer was born nearby. The fresco depicts the archangel Gabriel expelling Lucifer... it has delightful details for those who love art and architecture.

Today I bring you one of the most important buildings in the historic center of a town in the highest area north of Tuscany, the magnificent palace dating from the 16th century. The palace is spread over four floors, with a total area of approximately 1000 square meters. On the ground floor are the old warehouses and the interior courtyard with garden and well. Through a magnificent interior marble staircase, one reaches the noble wing, composed of 14 rooms and embellished by the beautiful frescoes designed by Niccolò Contestabilie and original materials from the period. The upper floor has 11 more rooms.
