This anthology of literature translated from the Kashmiri language is the first of its kind. It is as much an introduction into the literary landscape of Kashmir as a journey through its history. From pre-modern verse to radio plays, folk chants to metaphysical ghazals, flash fiction to excerpts from a novel – the Big Book of Kashmiri Literature is compilation of memory and an anthology of voices. The reader will encounter scholars, saints, experimental dramatists and unlettered poets starting from the 14th century to today.

Kashmiri has a thriving oral tradition, a literary culture that borrowed from the East and a print culture that engaged with the West and it all comes together in this volume with a promise of immersion into the emotional topography of the land, the language and the people.

If I start by saying how much I enjoyed finishing this book, it’ll be a lie. Because I haven’t finished it. And I don’t think anyone will ever finish it in one sitting. And that’s probably the science behind this. The meaning behind how this was built. In a beautiful scheme of things @onaiza brings over 30 translators in this mammoth of a book. I find myself coming back to it, again and again. And what is even worse is, I sleep thinking of the various characters and rush to find originals - I can’t wait to share them with you. Soon on @yikvot app. But this post isn’t about that, this post is about this incredible and memorable shift in the history of Kashmiri literature. So happy to see this journey for so many years. And honestly, thanks to Onaiza for always being there for my various queries and difficult words all this while. Much love, and honestly, immense respect. Inverse Journal is proud to present an exclusive dialogue with Onaiza Drabu, the editor of the recently released The Big Book of Kashmiri Literature (Penguin Books, 2026), and Ashaq Hussain Parray and Rounak Bhat, two of its principal translators. The transcribed conversation is the result of an online dialogue held on August 2, 2026 and moderated by Amjad Majid, editor at Inverse Journal. What follows are insights into the translation process that reveal how an anthology can carry a literary culture shaped by recitation, song, memory and communal life onto the printed page. The conversation also explores the collaborative nature of translating and producing such an extensive tome that reflects translation as embodied and situated work, taking into account the unstable boundary that exists between oral traditions and written texts, the politics associated with representation and the greater challenges of bringing Kashmiri literature to wider audiences without breaking away from the people and the practices that sustain it.
