POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
My grandmother Glenda would tear up whenever a patriotic song would play. I can recall her face in awe at boatyard barbecues and in the days that followed 9/11 whenever Lee Greenwood or Toby Keith sang of our lands and seas. This pride and emotion has touched our whole family. The year Lady Gaga sang the National Anthem at the Super Bowl, my Uncle Anthony (an Army vet) and I both wept at her rendition. One of the best moments of my life was the minutes before a NY Rangers playoff game, as my brother and I witnessed The Garden’s flashing red, white, and blue lights while the crowd blessed America in unison.

I can go on.

Watching the Concert for New York in 2001 with the group of kids I grew up with in one house as “the grown ups” watched next door. Not fully grasping until years later that this group of adults were in the throes of grief, and the reason we spent so much time with these families was the fact that community heals wounds.

Being at Yankees Stadium on the anniversary of the attack on the Twin Towers as the crowd applauded the President and chanted “U.S.A.” I was pregnant with our first baby and couldn’t help but wonder what the future held for us all.

When my brother returned from a cross-country road trip during a summer that I was in college, his telling of arriving at the Grand Canyon on the morning of the Fourth of July as the sun rose and “America the Beautiful” played on the car’s radio has always stuck with me.

That one scene in The Sandlot with the fireworks.

Maybe I thought it was just about the music for a while. A good song always makes me cry. But I realize now it was more about pride. It’s easy to be emotional about America. Many people are, and for many different reasons in many different directions. It was luck that landed me here, and I don’t take that for granted.

I believe in American innovation. I believe in freedom of speech and the beauty of discourse. I am very proud to be an American.

Cheers to the next 250 years. 🇺🇸 taken in United States America by @onasirom

Thank you to my Pa for being my studio assistant and helping bring my vision to life. And, of course, to @houseofhackney and #milobaughman for sparking the idea in the first place. It all started with the vintage chairs and wallpaper. Oh - and to Ryan Connor for marrying me! by @onasirom

Years ago, I fell for Kadi’s artwork. I knew the moment I spotted one of her luxurious beaded chokers that’d I would wear one on the day I married Ryan. Before a marriage proposal, before any inspiration board was created - Kadi’s beadwork was always a part of the vision I had for my bridal look. I’m so thankful to Savannah for bringing Kadi & I together.

A Staten Island Ferry ride to honor ‘the’ Patrick Warren Baeszler.

Spread the word: we will meet on the Staten Island side for the 2:30 pm boat. We’ll bring a speaker and just be together as the boat crosses the harbor. A ride PWB loved.

Hope to see you all there. by @onasirom

It seems we don’t have much control over the big matters in this life: when we get here, and when we leave. We are born into these families, cities, and bodies without knowing where they’ll take us. We meet people and practice our crafts. We stretch and overindulge. There is so much to smile about. Yet still, our vulnerable nature remains. Any day can bring us heartache, even when the sun is shining.

This past October, a friend so dear to me left this world. The loss of Patrick Warren Baeszler has left my heart unzipped. He remains the sharpest example of a good friend, a renaissance man. Now, no song is sung without PWB woven into its tune.

This past October, my brother Nick, and my friend Jamie brought a little boy into the world. Mack has made me an aunt. He, with his red hair & sweet demeanor, has brought me authentic joy and deeper understanding in every moment spent together.

Smiles. Heartache.

The Tuesday before last, in our sun-filled living room, Ryan asked me to marry him. There was no other response available to me besides, “of course”.

Days later, my friend’s husband called to share that he has left this world as well. Daniel Eastwood told me everything about him on our first meeting. The story of a man that I will continue to cherish.  Being close to Daniel fueled my creativity and my soul.

Smiles. Heartache.

We may not have much control, but we are allotted our choices. Perhaps all we can do is honor ourselves, our loved ones, and the people that we’re missing by what we choose to do. How we spend our days. There are so many people I choose to honor, and for that I am grateful.

As I did on repeat after losing Jeremy, Caroline, and my sweet Pacci – I listened to the first Alabama Shakes album at full blast while in the car the other day. This time Ryan drove, he held my hand as I sang and as I cried for all the smiles and for all the heartache. For him, I am grateful. by @onasirom
