STORIES WE TELL: “WITHOUT YOU NEAR”

This collaboration was born in a hotel room in San Diego in late 2004.

Both @markusschulz and Gabriel & Dresden were playing there that night, and afterward I ended up in Markus’ hotel room for one of our classic late night music nerd sessions where we’d just play each other ideas and tracks we were excited about.

At one point Markus started playing me songs he was working on for his debut artist album and finished with a demo he was making with Departure (@zubinmowlavi & Boris Borajani (@oncalldj) aka Boris MD).

And immediately I was hooked.

“It’s a little bit lonely down here...
it’s a little bit faint without you near...”

I remember thinking:

“What a beautiful way to say something that’s been said a million times.”

Markus then said:

“This is the odd one out on my album. I don’t really know where to take it. Want to work on it with me?”

The next day I played it for Josh and he was instantly in too.

A few weeks later Markus came to our studio in San Leandro and we spent the weekend shaping the song together.

The turning point came when Josh came up with the line:

“How can you sit there watching someone else?”

Then he had another idea:

Record everyone singing it.

So pretty much everybody at the house that weekend ended up around a microphone singing that line. When we stacked all the voices together, the record suddenly took on a whole new life.

The verses worked.

The chorus worked.

And now the song felt bigger than the sum of its parts.

What always makes me smile is that Markus originally described it as “the odd one out.”

Yet somehow the song he wasn’t sure about became the title track of his debut artist album:

Without You Near.

Sometimes the songs choose their own destiny. by @oncalldj
