I've been so tired in the last few weeks I must have subconsciously decided to crawl back to my childhood and get inspiration from the smooth jazz stations I grew up with for this month's playlist. But of course all that got swept away. It's another diverse mix this month, with a new drop from Thai singer @pamigax, a cathartic highlight from @mulimusical... and the jazzy stuff in between.

Yes, I'll admit I'm heavily behind on @fitterkarma, the band behind viral hit "Pag-ibig ay Kannibalismo II"—but between their straightforward approach and their hyperstylized imagery, I think I get it. Could they be singing for a whole generation of Filipinos? Maybe. But their new album, kung tayo'y nasa isang horror na pelikula, tiyak ako ang una mong papatayin, suggests we haven't seen their final form yet. And I don't mean that in a bad way, no.

As you would expect, @aimyon36 was not on my radar before this playlist, J-pop being a little more impenetrable outside of anime and the algorithm unless I commit a lot of time to it. But these dates come in burst, and this instance was over dinner at @hamburgyoshi.ph, and particularly their really good grilled beef tongue. And this song was playing, and I was trying so hard to Shazam this song amidst the din. Successful, but I still looked foolish afterward.

I am not entirely sure why this song came into my head as I was changing my bedsheets. Of all the times, of all the songs. But it was a nice way to while the time.

Now, if there was a song specifically about banana pudding, it'd be in this playlist. Closest I have is banana pancakes, and that won't do, so I'll have to pull out @semisonicband's "Secret Smile" from the stash instead. A little too romantic, on the surface, but at this point, what is?

As if to drill down the point that this month's playlist began with a rumination on a sound somewhat lost in time, we begin the hour with a track from Lenny Lenny, aka @lennertcoorevits of the Belgian band @compactdiskdummiesofficial. It's a completely different sound from the former—of course, I had mentioned the band on the Once Monthly's Instagram, but not the main playlists—with "She Only Loves You (In The Summertime)" being languid, chill, and according to the press release I saw, "highly danceable". At least that's how he's selling his upcoming album. I'm interested.

Last week I heard a busker singing this @moonlanegardens song, which reminded me that, yes, this is my favorite song from their breakthrough record, Strike Whilst the Iron is Hot—and this is the album that carried the band's biggest breakthrough, "Hanggang Kailan". It always felt painfully resonant, how the song ends with the second chorus, with a tinge of hope amidst a sea of resignation. Right now, it feels quite resonant, but alas, it is what it is.

At this point in my life @ashemusic came and went like a flash. For a couple of weeks I could not escape "Stop the Wedding!"—and it is a nice little song with those classic pop flourishes that I love—and then suddenly I got busy and I kind of lost her. But at least now I know she's around. I had heard of her work with @wearethefavors but didn't immediately connect its cheery pop to her. Now I can. And with more new stuff coming, I'm sure I'll make that connection faster in no time.

My next playlist, which drops in a couple of days, had a somewhat different shape as I was putting it together. There's still some trace of it in the final hour, especially towards the end, but it was much heavier on the smooth jazz until the very last minute, when I ended up swapping a few songs out and putting in some new songs.

One of those that had to go, sadly, is @aljarreauofficial's classic "Mornin'", one of those songs that were a staple of the smooth jazz radio stations I grew up with—and, later, a feature of the first CDs my dad bought. Not that it fully applies to me, of course. It's the nostalgia that matters here.

I wasn’t at the @overoctoberph concert over the weekend, something I kind of regret now, partly because of the pretty stacked guest line-up (including @apohikingsocietymusic, of all people!) That said, I asked @steph.jp3g to get me their acrylic magnet because I thought it was pretty punny. Turns out it’s an actual calendar I can use until the end of 2027. But would I even want to tear off those pages?

I'm kind of surprised this is the first time I featured @eeegeephonehome on my playlists—or maybe I featured one of her songs on Instagram before? Anyway, she has been on my radar the last few years, but in another classic case of a song hitting me later than you'd expect, "I Hear A String Quartet Playing Everywhere I Go" had to wait a few months after the release of her latest album. This song feels vintage and also fresh in the best way possible. That build to a grand big thing at the end? Yes, please.

I was at @powerplantmall one weekend when the guy on the piano (you know the one) decided to play @the_carpenters_official's "I Won't Last A Day Without You". I found myself humming along to it quite loudly, to the point that an elderly woman heard me, looked at me, and smiled. Must be thinking about how I still know the song. But then, I do, of course. And that is the story behind why this song is in this month's playlist.
