Growing up transmasc, I felt a deep disconnect from my body for as long as I can remember. I went through a painful phase of trying to force myself into an “acceptable” version of a trans man, resisting my true self, which brought me no peace. A hidden part of myself was aching to come out, manifesting in self-soothing behaviors like drawing on my skin or using sewing needles on my fingertips.
This past year, during a confusing transitional point in my life, a dear friend took me to get a septum piercing. The piercer was wonderful—she shared stories, understood me, and laughed with me. As she pierced my nose, I felt a rush of blissful adrenaline. It was a moment of absolute reclamation. The androgyny I had long desired was finally worshipped onto my body.
Through this, I discovered that I could transmute pain into euphoria through piercings and tattoos, a process that has accelerated my journey toward self-acceptance and transformation. I am now on a path to accepting the feminine side of myself that I had long repressed in a desperate attempt to be accepted by others.
My transness is defined by my own state of being, not by external validation. I have learned I can transform both my body and mind on my own terms. This piece is about reclaiming my femininity through body modification, an appreciation for the community I’ve found, and the profound self-acceptance I have finally reached.
