By a Thread returns to Ed Fringe after a sold-out 2025 season! Long spools of white rope run through industrial pulleys and wrap around bodies. The show weaves virtuosic acrobatics through moments of confusion, hilarity, romance, playfulness, fear and friendship, uncovering the threads of connection present in all relationships.

Australian circus at its best, By a Thread is an exploration of trust and risk six meters above the ground.

📣 Introducing Circus Centre Melbourne’s Companies in Residence 🤩 We are proud to announce One Fell Swoop Circus, 13 EGGS, and Darling and Daring as our new Companies in Residence.

Launched this year, the Company in Residence program marks an expansion of how CCM supports independent artists, moving beyond providing access to space towards deeper, ongoing partnership. Built on a Community of Practice model, the program embeds resident companies at CCM as active contributors, collaborators and leaders within a shared learning environment, offering access to studio space, workplace infrastructure, sector connections and platforms for visibility, in exchange for genuine participation in the life of the Centre.

The three companies were selected through an open expression of interest process, and will take up a 12-month residency at our Collingwood home, where they will train, create and connect with the wider CCM community through open training, showings, skill shares, shared studio time and more over the course of the residency.

Spanning emerging, mid-career and established practice, the selected companies reflect CCM’s commitment to supporting artists at every stage of their career.

Please join us in congratulating these incredible companies, we can’t wait to get started! 🎉

By a Thread uses aerial circus to explore ideas of connection, trust and risk. The rope used in the show becoming an explicit methaphor for these ideas - physically connecting the performers.

We often get asked post show about the By a Thread rope. It's a 3 ply cotton rope, so actually feels quite soft in your hand, though any tricks we perform that involve a slide could result in a pretty nasty rope burn. Hence why you'll see a lot of our costume components are made from denim.

The show uses a single 30 meter long piece which weighs just under 30 kgs, so we can take it on a plane - but only just 😅

One rope lasts for about one fringe festival season - so around 30 shows. After that it's time to find a sailing supply store and a new rope!
