Have you checked out the 7 Cs of Sustainable Seafood recently? It’s had a little facelift and we’ve updated them to include Culture.

We developed the 7 Cs to help empower consumers to make educated seafood purchasing choices. These principles give you a framework to help you choose seafood that is local, abundant, harvested responsibly, and that fairly compensates the fishermen.

🐟 Curiosity
🐟 Community-Based
🐟 Supply Chain
🐟 Change It Up
🐟 Cycles
🐟 Cultivate
🐟 Culture

In the following weeks, we’ll dive deeper into each of the 7 Cs, but you can always check out the link in our bio to learn more. by @onefishfoundationorg

Inland Ocean Coalition was proud to partner with the One Fish Foundation at FarmAid in Virginia Beach to engage concertgoers in conversations about sustainable seafood and responsible aquaculture.

At our Homegrown Village booth, we introduced attendees to seafood farmers from across the country and explored the importance of understanding where our seafood comes from and how the methods used to cultivate it can impact our oceans and environment.

We encouraged festival-goers to think about their actions and choices when it comes to seafood sourcing.

Through initiatives like the Atlas for Values-Based Aquaculture, IOC continues to work alongside partners to connect communities with trusted resources and delicious seafood!

Cycles: eat with the ecosystem; try sourcing local seafood available in the season that you are in.

Eating seasonally ensures that the species we’re eating get the time necessary to maintain their population, leading to healthy and productive ecosystems that continue to produce delicious seafood for us to enjoy year round.

Unsure of what’s in season in your area? Connect with local fishermen and fishmongers to find out, or look for guides, like those from @eating_with_the_ecosystem .

Check out our pinned post, or the link in our bio, to learn more about the 7 Cs!

It’s Fascinating Fish Friday!

Meet the Atlantic Wolffish!

🐟 Lifespan: up to 20 years
🐟 Habitat: Atlantic Coast of North America from Labrador to Great South Channel and Georges Bank.
🐟 Good at: Smiling for the camera
🐟 Bad At: Keeping up with old friends

These blueish-grey fish tend to spend their lives solitary, pairing up with a mate for only a few months each year. The tapered bodies and large round heads of the Atlantic Wolffish are not their most distinguishing features. That would be their multiple rows of teeth. So many, in fact, that their front teeth will protrude from their mouths, giving them a wolfish smile. They've been heavily fished off of Cape Cod and the coast of Maine, and their disappearance means the growth of their preferred prey – sea urchins and green crabs – which have begun to disrupt the region's ecosystem. by @onefishfoundationorg

Change It Up: try underutilized species like hake, scup, mackerel, cusk, Acadian redfish, and more!

Along with eating a larger variety of species, we encourage you to try new recipes and learn about cooking with whole, bone-in fish, and using some of the less visually appealing parts for stocks and stews.

New England friends can check out @eating_with_the_ecosystem ‘s website to find a comprehensive list of local edible New England species. Know of a guide for other parts of the country? Share them with us in the comments.

Supply Chain: patronize local seafood stores (or subscribe to a Community Supported Fisheries) that ensure transparency back to the boat and pay a fair price to the fish harvesters.

Money spent locally tends to stay in the community, so when a fair price is paid to the fish harvester and seafood grower, you are supporting your own local economy. This connection also means that fishermen get a better return on less catch, and the ocean gets a break.

Unsure where to find a Community Supported Fishery (CSF)? Check out @boat2fork ‘s Seafood Finder to connect with one in your area.

Community-Based: choose local seafood harvested by community-based fisherfolk and other seafood producers who care about the resource.

Many communities have farmers markets that offer the opportunity to connect with the folks that grow your food and steward the resource while doing it. @slowfishnorthamerica has started using that model to host Community Seafood Markets in New Orleans, directly connecting seafood eaters with fishermen and seafood growers.

Don’t have a farmers market or Community Seafood Market nearby? Look to see if a Community Supported Fishery (CSF) is available in your community. Modeled after CSAs, CSFs are another way to connect with Community-Based fisherfolk who care about the resource and the community they’re feeding. Check out the Local Catch Network Seafood Finder @boat2fork to find seafood harvesters and growers in your area.

Curiosity: ask where, when, how, and by whom your fish or seafood was caught.

Asking questions like these empowers consumers to have control over the type of food systems they are supporting. If you don’t like the answer to one or more of those questions, or if someone doesn’t want to answer the question at all, you may want to purchase your seafood somewhere else. Asking questions promotes consumer autonomy.

BETTER FOR WHO? Read the testimonies from fisher and Indigenous Peoples from 9 different countries about the harms of industrial aquaculture and download the full report ahead of the FAO’s Conference on Fisheries in Rome.

We do not need a Blue Transformation agenda that makes corporations stronger and fishing communities weaker. A real transformation begins with our rights, our territories and our food sovereignty. Fish should nourish communities before they nourish corporate supply chains. How can this be called transformation if it reproduces the same model of dispossession that our communities have resisted for decades?

FAO needs to stop promoting the expansion and intensification of industrial aquaculture and instead fulfill their commitment to implement the Small Scale Fisheries Guidelines and support fisher peoples’ local food systems that have the ability to reach the people that need it most. If @fao truly wants to end hunger they need to support local food systems. Otherwise they are supporting corporations that are actively destroying the possibility for people to feed themselves locally long term. This is not food security. This is nutritional dispossession.

Alligator gar are helping scientists see the success of a Mississippi River restoration project. After being cut off from the river for more than a century by a levee, Loch Leven in southwest Mississippi is once again connected to the river's natural floodplain. A new box culvert allows water and fish to move in and out of the 6,000-acre former farm, creating habitat and restoring important connections within the river ecosystem. The return of alligator gar is a promising sign that these restoration efforts are helping bring life back to the floodplain. by @onefishfoundationorg
