I Know it's Christmas, But..Why are you Burning Tyres & Plastics for Cooking?

In many places, people burn tyres and plastic as a cheap way to make fire for cooking, especially during busy times like Christmas. But this “shortcut” comes with serious hidden costs.

When tyres burn, they release toxic smoke containing carcinogens like benzene, dioxins, PAHs, and heavy metals that can damage lungs, hearts, and immune systems. Open plastic burning emits persistent organic pollutants that stay in the air and soil long after the flames die. Globally, nearly 70 million tons of plastic waste are burned in the open, releasing huge amounts of toxic aerosols into the atmosphere.

The smoke doesn’t just hurt people, it pollutes soil, water, and crops, and long-term exposure increases the risk of respiratory illnesses and even cancer.

Let’s choose safe, clean cooking fuels this Christmas, for our health and our environment.
