Born in 1937 and on April 2, 2025…my world shifted.

My Mema. My grandmother. My safe place. My everything. You’re My Latest, My Greatest Inspiration…

Mema didn’t just raise me, she SAVED me. I’m her granddaughter, yes, but I was more like her fourth child. I’m the first born of so many titles, granddaughter, great-grandchild, niece, great niece. My mom had me as a teenager, and when life got hard, and it really got hard for my siblings and I… my grandma stepped in and gave me something so rare… stability. Safety. Love with no limits.

Under her roof, I didn’t just survive, I healed. I grew. I found my footing. I didn’t have to worry about the police kicking in the door every other week, and everything else that came with parents who hustled. Mema gave me a life without trauma. She gave me protection, structure, and unwavering support. She made sure I graduated high school and college. She encouraged my dreams. She prayed for me every single night. She reminded me every single time we spoke, just how proud she was of me. That kind of love?! That kind of affirmation! It changes a person.

Every Sunday, no matter where I was, I’d call my grandparents. That rhythm of love and check-ins shaped my weeks. Now, I don’t know how to move forward without it. My heart is shattered. I’m so used to her being there… cheering me on, loving on my children, embracing my friends like her own. She created a home where everybody felt safe, cared for, and welcomed.

Mema was the first in her family to graduate college. A trailblazer. A teacher. A businesswoman. A real lady, classy, articulate, wise, and strong. She was everything you hope for in a grandparent and more. She poured into me, and into all of us.

I don’t know how I’ll heal from this. But what I do know is that her legacy lives in me. In my children. In my granddaughter. In the way I love, lead, and have always protected others. Because she showed me how.

Part 2: BET Awards 2026 was one for the books! So many moving parts over the weekend that there’s no way it could all fit into one video of Culture’s Biggest Night. Watching so many people I genuinely respect doing what they do best made me proud. The long hours, the hustle, the problem solving, the teamwork. It’s a beautiful thing to witness. Part 1: BET Awards 2026 was nothing short of unforgettable! A weekend filled with Black excellence, celebration, and giving people their flowers while they can still receive them.

Shout out to everyone who played a part in making Culture’s Biggest Night a success. From the caterers, security teams, production crews, assistants, Uber and car service partners, photographers, videographers, talent teams, hospitality, and every person working behind the scenes. It truly takes a village, and every role mattered. Your hard work did not go unnoticed.

In the 90’s I was on soccer fields & basketball courts, running plays by day, in the Dojang & Dojo learning to protect myself, as I got older I was chasing dreams of becoming a Tony Award winning Musical Theater legend by night.

Well LOVED & known… High school photography, capturing moments before we even knew they’d matter & end up here on Instagram, making sure every one of my friends made it into the yearbook… because I was the Editor & we ALL deserved to be remembered.

M.G.T. & G.C.C. class on Saturdays no matter what we did the day/night before, I was present. Traveling the country, seeing life beyond my own backyard, college years unfolding, lessons inside & outside the classroom. Meeting my First love… the kind that teaches you something, whether it stays or not.

Thank you to my grandparents for never silencing my VOICE, for letting me be expressive & while living my BEST Muslim 90s girl life, grounded, growing, glowing… in my own way, on my own terms. That was me. That was my 90’s. 🤲🏽💚💪🏽
